Overview

Key Specifications

  • Dimensions: 522 / 214 / 358 mm

Bernina was founded in 1893 by Karl Friedrich Gegauf in Steckborn, Switzerland. The name ‘Bernina’ was inspired by Piz Bernina, the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps. Bernina has been in the sewing industry for so many decades and has been an inventor for numerous sewing innovations such as the world’s first hemstitch sewing machine, the first machine with a patented snap-on presser foot, the first machine with a fully automatic 1-step buttonhole, and the first-ever sewing computer with a Microsoft Windows OS[1]. With the rise of technological advancements and computers, the company created Activa 145 which has built-in software and the ability to convert scanned images into embroidery patterns. Bernina sees to it that their sewing machines are inclined with the rise of technology, just like in phones and other electronic appliances.

Pros

  • Stitch Quality – This machine creates consistent and high-quality stitches. What’s great about it is that with this machine, you won’t have to adjust the adjustable presser foot as it works perfectly!
  • Empty Bobbin Warning – You have probably experienced sewing with an empty bobbin at some point. Well, don’t worry, because this machine will inform you whenever the bobbin is empty. It’ll automatically stop sewing when the bobbin is empty.
  • Knee Lift – This feature is a must-have for serious sewists! You won’t have to manually raise the presser foot, instead, all you need is a nudge of the knee. It’s one of my favorite things about this machine.

Cons

  • Frequent Cleaning – Some users complained about the machine frequently warning about cleaning certain features of the machine such as the needle cutter. The weird thing about it is that it wasn’t used yet. Other warnings include oiling the machine which still sticks awhile around even after I’ve oiled it, which makes it so frustrating to use at times.
  • The Starting Lockstitch – Since it’s a computerized machine, there are some drawbacks when it comes to its computerized system. The Bernina has an automatic lockstitch feature which will create a mini-lockstitch whenever you start sewing, after a thread cut.
