How to Wear: The Black Blazer

Monday, August 12, 2013
I'm going to be starting a little monthly series on the blog of "How to wear...." a specific item with outfit examples. First up is how to wear the black blazer!

I feel like a lot of people associate the black blazer with the corporate-business-office life which puts them off in wearing it more often. But here's a secret... You can wear it outside of the office.

The black blazer has gotta be one of my favorite closet staples. I love it so much I have it in FOUR different styles. (Someone sign me up for Hoarders.) And it doesn't hurt that I got them all at thrift stores. People seem to give away blazers all the time. It's like shoulder pads aren't in style anymore.

Below are four ways you can incorporate the black blazer into your every day outfits..

If you've been reading this blog for more than five minutes, you know I loooove my boyfriend jeans. Why not pair it with a black blazer for a tomboyish look? Offset it with small feminine details like heels (1,4), sequins (3), or jewelry (2).

Wear your black blazer with skirts. I wore my cropped blazers in the outfits above with high-waist A-line skirts. Oversized and regular blazers would work well with fitted skirts. Play with proportions to see what combinations are right for your body type.

Blazers are more for cooler temps and with that I usually throw on a scarf for extra warmth. Tie it, wear it as a headband, or wrap it loosely around your neck.

My last tip on how to wear the black blazer is belting. This is a great way to create an hour-glass shape. The best part about belting your blazer is you can wear it with anything...skinny jeans, full skirts, pencil skirts, bootcut jeans, sweatpants.. Just kidding about the last part. Maybe..

What are some of your favorite ways to wear the black blazer?

  1. Any tips on how to style a blazer for broad shoulders? I'm so self-conscious every time I try one on because I feel so manly. I'm an hourglass so my hips are a similar width as my shoulders but shoulder pads scare me to death because I really do not need help in that department. I have a large frame - and I actually mean my skeleton, not as a euphemism for being plump. I only wear cardigans over my outfits to work.

But I'm guessing it's just one of those things where I shouldn't think about it and nobody will notice.

    1. ^^^ I was going to ask the same question!

    2. I have wide shoulders as well, I always just snip the shoulder pads off! It's very easy, you don't have to be a sewer or anything like that.

    3. ...seamstress! That's the word I was looking for!

    4. i actually think i have broad shoulders too. i thought i had an hour glass shape but i'm actually an inverted triangle with my shoulders being wider than my hips.

in the few pictures above, i'm wearing an oversized blazer. i realized it was drowning my petite frame while also accentuating my broad shoulders so i got rid of it. now i focus more on cropped blazers for a more "shrunken" look.

if you think you have broad shoulders or want to move the focus away from it, i would consider what natasha said above and take off the shoulder pads, which i alwaysalways do! and perhaps shop around for a cropped blazer, or one that slightly flares out at the hips to create the hour glass shape if you want.

    5. I would like to add one more thing, if you could get your hands on a black blazer that has some sort of vertical self-print (the ones that shine a little), that'd be great.

  2. Elaine, first things first...great post! Gone are the days when blazers were confined to 'office wear'.

Secondly, you look like a 16 year old in the last photo in the boyfriend jeans segment. So cute! :)

  3. I love this! What a great idea! The black blazer is such a staple and I love all the ways you showed how to wear it!
    Sincerely, Sara

  4. My favorite ways to wear them are with scarves and skinny jeans. I LOVE THEM!

  8. I've admired these black blazer looks for a long time but somehow I - practically queen of secondhand - never thought of thrifting one 'til this post yesterday. By 3 pm I'd located a perfect blazer for under three dollars. Now having fun styling it! Yay!

  9. OMG. I was literally looking through clearance sales online at various stores for a BLACK BLAZER. I had to take a break b/c it was overwhelming and then I started to doubt whether or not it was really versatile enough to spend money on.

I took a break on Pinterest and saw this! It was like providence, nudging me not to give up. So I'll persevere and actually try going to a thrift store.
