A Name and a Blessing

Necklace: thrifted $3 (similar) | Shirt: c/o Choies | Belt: thrifted $2 | Skirt: thrifted $3 (similar) | Shoes: Vince Camuto $70 (similar) | Total = $78

I wore this the Sunday we blessed Grey. It was during the same weekend my family was here. It was nice to have them included for the baby blessing since my parents gave Grey his middle name (which is a Korean name). Traditionally in Korea, the grandparents name the grandchildren. My own paternal grandfather gave me my name. ("Elaine" isn't my legal name! My mom randomly picked it out of a baby book when I was 7 because I was tired of people mispronouncing my Korean name.) But since we're in America and I feel more American than Korean, we gave them his middle name. They still loved it. Win win!! So, tell me....who named you? and what inspired them?

  1. My dad named me. My first name is Phong Van. Phong is the name of the town my mom was from. Van is a name of his first love. (Yay, I know, my poor mother must have had a fit.)

When I do have kids, I will have to name them. Because my husband would name them numbers (yes, actual numbers like 1,2,3) So I would not let him do that to our kids. I get to name them right because I gave birth to them, right?

  2. My mom name me Katie Jo...she actually had a dream about that name. And it's just Katie, not Katherine, etc. And Jo is also my aunt's middle name. I love it.

I'm currently pregnant with my first, a girl, and we decided on a first name early on, but finding a middle name we both like is challenging!

    xo,
    Katie

  5. I love those shoes. Having ankle straps makes heels + baby so much easier.

My mom wanted me to have an Italian name, so she chopped the "O" off "Olivia" and voila! She also gave me her maiden name as a middle name because her dad didn't have any sons. I gave it to my daughter, too, to carry on his family name.

  6. I think I was named after a victorian painter or author (my name is Emily). Either option was a tad bid melancholy. It try to make up for it ;)

I love the combo above - I have a navy skirt similar to that one and you've inspired me to pair find a red necklace to go with it!!

  7. uber cute outfit, Elaine! I missed getting inspiration from you while you were pregnant! (obviously you had to wear pregnancy clothes, but still...) LOL!
That's funny! So if you don't like the name your parents give your child, pick another one! That would actually be sort of cool, you could help pick out your own name, versus being stuck with one didn't like! =) I think your idea of letting your parents pick the middle name is a great one! A little American, a little Korean! Perfect mix!
    Have a great day,

  8. Love the outfit...and the family photo! Grey kills me with his cuteness! My dad named me, but my grandparents gave me my middle name (which is Korean), same as Grey! I sure wish my grandfather had given me a middle name that was easier to pronounce though. Apparently, it's a great and powerful name in Korean, but in English, it is full of hard "s"es and hard "k"s and sounds awful. After hearing my elementary school friends butcher it and mock it, I have since gone with my middle initial only. =) Although I am impressed these days that so many people are going with their ethnic name, and people are getting more comfortable with pronouncing foreign words, so maybe someday people won't butcher our names! Of course, my dog's name is Shumai (easy, right?) and yet everyone still butchers even her name...so maybe we're not as close as I think. =)

  9. My mom named me for the meaning (it means "love"). I love the idea of names with meaning, so that's (mostly) why we named our kiddos their names, too.

  12. He's beautiful!

My mother is Thai and she wanted to name me Cattleya (pronounced "Catria") but my dad insisted that his daughter could not be named something with the word "cattle" in it and so I got "Katrina" as a middle name instead and Isabelle as a first. All-American too.

  13. First, the outfit is really cute, I love your shoes!

My name Jonna (pronounced like Donna with a J) was given to me by my parents, my first name is after my father John. My middle name is Mari (pronounced Marie) and is after my mother Mary.

It's a mouthful. Most people call me JP LOL
