30 Tips for Dressing in your 30's by Ashley

Hi! My name is Ashley and I am a self prescribed Diet Coke and chocolate addict, wife, and mama to two! I blog over at flats to flip flops about fashion, faith, and philanthropy. Modest fashion, my mommy moments (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and giving back are the theme at my place. As a stay-at-home-mom, I love connecting with other women and sharing my love for fashion and being a mom.

We've all been there or are going to be there in the near future. The dreaded 3-0. What is it about this number that makes us shake in our (very cute) boots and makes us question our wardrobe choices? As a society, and myself included, we are scared of aging. But I say let's age gracefully, shall we?

So here are my 30 tips for dressing in your 30's:

1. Don't hide yo-self.

Just because you hit a certain number doesn't mean it is time to break out the muumuus! Work what ya got! In fact, oversized clothes most always make you look bigger than you really are. And no one wants that.

2. Fit is key.

Especially when it comes to pants, my friends. And mid-rise is your friend. Muffin tops are no bueno, no matter what age!

3. Use the Junior Section sparingly.

I am not one of those that is going to tell you to stay away from the Junior's section, cuz, frankly, that would be hypocritical. But I definitely think it should be used in small doses and wisely.

4. Stock your closet with classics.

You can never go wrong with certain pieces: button-downs, blazers, and a good pair of jeans will never, ever let you down.

5. Don't be afraid of bright colors.

Bright colors are all the rage - there is no need to shy away from them. If they make you a little nervous, try incorporating them in accessories like scarves and necklaces first.

6. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.

Nothing is better than a simple outfit with fab accessories. Let your personality shine through by picking up accessories that speak to you and keeping the rest of your outfit simple.

7. Don't be afraid of skinny jeans.

Skinny jeans can look good on anyone. It is all about the fit. Take the time to find skinny jeans that look right on you.

8. Structured blazers are your friend.

A structured blazer can instantly make you look 10 lbs. lighter if done right. Look for blazers that have shape and bring the eye in. It's the easiest weight loss plan ever.

9. Go ahead... Mix it up!

Mixing patterns is a great way to add a little fun to an outfit, and if done right, can look super sophisticated. Pairing florals with stripes or polka dots will never steer you wrong.

10. Dress for the occasion.

One of my biggest pet peeves. Dress for where you are going. Traveling? Comfort and style are key. It is not time to break out your old prom dress. Remember, casual can still be cute, and sometimes the occasion calls for casual.

11. Layer it up.

Layering is a great way to show your style. Start with a basic outfit and then keep adding. Go crazy if you want. You can always take a couple pieces away if you need to.

12. Find new inspiration.

Inspiration is everywhere. From Pinterest to blogs to magazines, there is an endless supply. Look around and find something that speaks to you.

13. Shop new stores.

Try stores that you would never usually find yourself in. You will surprised at what you can find that will speak your name.

14. Try a trend.

Don't be afraid of trends. Used sparingly, trendy items can be a really great way to add a little spice to your outfit.

15. Go flashy with your shoes.

A great way to add a little something something to your outfit is by adding a fun shoe. Try a print like leopard or a bright color like hot pink. Have fun with your shoes!

16. Wear the right undies.

Ladies, this is a big one. If you have never gone and got measured, now is the time. The right undergarments make a huge difference!

17. Get your hair did.

Hair is definitely an accessory to an outfit. So treat yourself and have it done because confidence is half the battle when rockin' an outfit.

18. Accentuate the small.

Belting the smallest part of your waist is a great way to accentuate the smallest part of your body, thus drawing the eye in and making you look slimmer!

19. Don't forget the basics.

V-neck tees, a good pair of jeans, and a great pair of flats will never go wrong. Make sure your closet is stocked with the basics.

20. Go shopping with a friend.

An honest friend. Take someone with you shopping who will tell you the truth, not just what you want to hear.

21. Wait a day.

Not sure about that purchase? Sleep on it! My rule is if I can't get it off my mind in 24 hours, then it's a solid purchase.

22. Always check the sale rack.

I always head straight for the sale rack in every store I enter (or the sale tab if it's online). Spending less is always a plus.

23. Splurge every once in a while.

On the opposite side of the coin, it is great to splurge every once in a while, especially on classic pieces that will stay in your closet for a while.

24. Love your body (or at least like it).

I know that this is a hard one, but it is super important. Dress for your body type and don't compare yourself to others.

25. Grab some neutrals.

Neutral colors will last a long time in your wardrobe and are a great staple to have in your closet. Neutral pants and shirts are also great paired with those brighter colors!

26. Find that perfect fitting dress.

You have to have one nice dress hanging in your closet! You're 30 now! Spend the time and the money when searching for that perfect one!

27. Try it on.. Always.

Please don't purchase without trying it on! Take that extra minute.. You will be glad you did!

28. Go through your closet every 6 months.

This is one of my favorite things to do. Get rid of any item you haven't worn at all the previous season. You won't be wearing it again, I promise! And for extra brownie points, donate your old clothes to your local Goodwill shop.

29. Buy a statement necklace. Stat.

If you don't have a statement necklace, buy one today! Seriously, a statement necklace can make the simplest outfit look complicated and put together!

30. Just be you.

Always be true to yourself! This is the best piece of advice I can give you! Be comfortable and confident in your clothes and you will be turning heads!
