I vividly remember trying to get away with wearing summer clothes through fall as a kid. My mom implemented a rule:  I could wear long pants and a short-sleeve shirt or shorts and a long-sleeve shirt, but I could NOT wear shorts and a short-sleeve shirt. I really like obeying rules. Well, most of them. I originally intended to wear off-white shorts (I know, I know -- it's after Labor Day.), but the off-white in the shorts was just different enough from the off-white in the sweater that it was too different to be the same, but too similar to be different, and therefore, did not look good. Even my husband agreed. That's when you know it looks bad. So, unfortunately, jorts had to suffice.
