Unknowing Designer Inspiration by Kari

Saturday, April 30, 2011
Hi everyone!  Aren't you glad that Elaine asked me to be a contributor only to love you and then leave you forever?  Sooo great!  Well I'm back (I know it hasn't been that long since my intro post) but I'm going to try to pop up here more often.  Promise.  So last weekend I went shopping at one of my favoritest stores Madewell.  They were having an additional 25% off all sale items and something had to be done.  I think I tried on just about every sale item.  The workers there were loving me!  As I was about to leave I spied this little gem:

I can't find it on their website so I'm not sure if it was just one sale at my store or what but I couldn't resist.  I love me some nautical flair.  I've pretty much been wearing this baby every day since I got it.  Seriously even to work.  Now, I don't know about you guys but I don't really have a bajillion bucks to buy designer stuff like ever.  But yesterday when I was wearing my new necklace a girl asked me where I got it from.  I told her and she said, "Oh it's a nice rendition of the Phillip Lim one."  What!?  So I googled as fast as my fingers could take me and look what popped up:

Gorge.  I don't have $225 bucks to spend on that guy but I paid one tenth of the price for my Madewell necklace and it has a similar look and feel.  What do you guys think?  Would you wear either one?  How would you style it?  Is this a sweet designer on a dime find?

I'm back...clothed this time.

Hey guys... I still wear clothes, see? I went for a simple casual girly look even though that description was not at all simple.

Thank you for all your kind words for Rosie Posie / Kitty!!! I think she is forgetting who I am.. She seems more scared of me than usual. I think that means I should quit my job to be with her.

I'm wearing a Love Stitch white blouse ($4), DownEast Basics shirt underneath (gift from my mother-in-law - buy it!), Old Navy brown belt ($10 - buy it!), handmade maroon skirt ($2), and Target clog sandals (gift from my in-laws) with a vintage Gucci bucket bag ($3).

KUTE belt!

{buy it for $34.99}
Round five in the KUTE spotlight! If you missed 'em, check out rounds one, two, three, and four.

I kind of like this black pyramid belt. It has a cool punky edge to it that I clearly lack. How would you style it? I feel like black skinnies and a tunic with black pumps is too clubby and too predictable. I think I would wear it with my nonexistent flowy floral dress. What about you?

Friday Recap (yes, already)

Friday, April 22, 2011
Today I wore a maroon scarf (gift from a blog friend), H&M white shirt ($10), Old Navy brown belt ($10 - buy it!), secondhand Gap flared jeans ($9), and Target clog sandals (gift from my in-laws) with a vintage Gucci bucket bag ($3). My belt was also slowly coming undone and nobody even told me. Just because I sit all day doesn't mean I don't care about how my belt looks. But I guess no one knew that.

Chase and I went to get Chinese food in Chinatown tonight and it was horrible. Worst $10 we've ever spent. It may have had something to do with the fact that our dinner was $10 and it could've fed 20 people and/or dogs.
So we went to Little Tokyo and bought some mochi to make us feel better about spending our money unwisely. Mango in my right hand and chocolate in my left hand (and my mouth). DELISH. (And, yes... I did change. Two outfits in one day isn't enough for this girl.)
Then Chase made me figure out how to get home by myself.
He found me.

Aren't you glad I didn't say orange? I am.

I've taken a more simple approach to dressing lately. I'm not really into piling on jewelry and doing my hair every day and most of the items in my closet are simple basics anyway. I think it also helped that I've had 5 extra minutes every morning to sleep in and not much time to think about what I should be wearing that day. So worth it. I think.

I couldn't get my hair to look the same as yesterday :(:(:(:(:(:(:(. That's why it looks effortlessly disheveled...because it really is.

I'm wearing an H&M white scarf (gift from a friend), Gap dress I snipped to be a shirt ($7), secondhand BDG blue skinny jeans ($17), H&M black flats ($13), and MNG by Mango sunnies (free with gift cards) with a vintage Gucci bucket bag ($3) and a tan bag from Korea ($10).

What outfit pictures?

Wednesday, April 20, 2011
So this week I took a break from taking outfit pics, but the crazy fashion blogger in me couldn't stop and snuck in a few phone pics...and posted them to my Facebook page.
On Monday I threw on one of Chase's plaid shirts, my J Brand black jeans, and a maroon scarf. I guess I wore some shoes too...and like five bags. They don't serve any purpose. They're just for looks.
Tuesday was the big reveal of my vintage tan belt I found with my friend this weekend!! She is an expert thrifter and took me to all her sweet spots. This belt was priced $12 but I got it down to $5. OHYEAH. I wore it with my Love Stitch white blouse, DownEast shirt underneath, and a green cardigan.
Today is Wednesday...also, my hair appointment at work! I kept it au naturale and wore a scarf to get those stupid bangs out of my face! I did it more for practical reasons but I actually liked it. I got my hairs trimmed and layers freshened up. She made me look soooo amazing! It's like my bangs just walked away. I also wore a little boy's black blazer, Hanes white shirt, and J Brand black jeans (three days straight - BOOM).

Just another manic...Sunday

You thought I was going to put Monday, right? I TOTALLY GOTCHU.

This was taken on Sunday if you didn't get it yet. But it was good - thanks for asking. We had stake conference this past weekend and my visiting teaching companion and I visited with three sisters on our list! ..one of whom is Kari!! I think her contributions to my blog count as VT...

Also, I did a crownbraid again but I did it further away from my hairline and the nape of my neck and I think I look less like a man this way.

I'm wearing a Forever 21 gold flower necklace ($8), Anthropologie gold bib necklace (free with gift cards), H&M white shirt ($10), Tulle teal skirt (c/o Tulle), and JCPenney berry heels (free with gift cards) with an MNG by Mango black bag (free with gift cards).

Hi, my name is... by Kari

Tuesday, April 19, 2011
Elaine asked me to come hang out with you cats every so often and I am just delighted.  I may or may not look familiar - Elaine did a street style post on me not too long ago.  (PS everyone was soo nice when she posted that.  Thank you!)  We met at church and discovered our shared passion for fashion and we've been friends since.  So why am I posting on Elaine's super cool blog?  Who am I?  Well....let me tell you.  My name is Kari and I live in LA and work as an assistant with my hubby and my puppy.  I write a random blog about who knows what over here.  I've been married for about 3 1/2 years and living in LA for 2 1/2.  I love fashion, food, photography, music, my stinky bulldog, 30 Rock and anything peanut butter and chocolate.   I plan to share my sweet shopping finds (I work at a shopping mall - hello sales!), trends I'm loving (mmm...brights for spring!), outfit posts (I'm a little more camera shy than Elaine, I'd rather be behind the camera), and whatever else!  I really hope you enjoy it!!

This is what I wore last Friday. I don't remember anything else from that day. My life isn't that interesting to retell. Although I do have a fun story to share from Saturday... Chase and I went to an animal shelter to check out the cats. We've been talking about getting one for a while now so we thought we'd "shop" around and see what our options were...AKA mission: find a really superduper cute one. We saw a cross-eyed black cat sneeze boogers all over his face. He tried to clean himself off for like ten minutes. I'm pretty sure he's my cat soulmate. Update:  Okay, I had to find a picture because I just can't stop thinking about him!! You can see his cute cross-eyed little face here.

P.S. I love this loose French-braid at the top of my head. It's the perfect way to get those stinkin bangs out of my face!

I'm wearing a black cardigan with lace detail ($17), Anthropologie gold bib necklace (free with gift cards), handmade green skirt from a curtain ($2), and Target clog sandals (gift from my in-laws) with an MNG by Mango black bag (free with gift cards).

Warning:  I wore this on Thursday. I've just been like sooooo buzy I'm posting it now. I don't know why this would be considered a warning. Now it's just long and obnoxious.

I haven't worn this skirt in a while because it has a bleached stain! a;dslkjfakldjf!!!! Chase and I tried to bleach it in a white bucket but it just turned the inside of the bucket pink. I might try again later... It's been so hot lately. I need more lighter skirts.

Got this belt-over-scarf idea and this hair braid from a couple of my pins. I LOVE THAT SITE xINFINITY. If you're Pinned too, let's be friends.

Today is my sister's birthday....... HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMOOLY!!!!! I'll mail your present out like next month.

I'm wearing a thrifted Gap chambray shirt ($4 - buy similar!), handmade maroon skirt ($2), yellow scarf (gift from Melissa), thrifted tan belt ($1), and Forever 21 sequin flats ($5) with an MNG black bag (free with gift cards).

Blogger Meet-Ups

Saturday, April 16, 2011
I know I haven't done a Getting to Know You post in foreverrrrrrrr. It's because the only questions I can think of are "What's your favorite color?" and "What's your other favorite color?" So today's questions are....

Have you ever met another blogger?
If so, who have you met?
If not, who do you want to meet without sounding creepy?

A few weeks ago, I met up with Jenn. We had been talking about meeting up for a while ever since Chase and I found out we were moving to L.A. But life happened and it took us almost 6 months to get together. We finally set a date and got dinner at Veggie Grill (delish and healthy).

Can you tell she's also a photographer?? I mean, look how good I look..
Me and Jenn. Isn't she adorable? I want her to start posting her outfits because she has better style than me!!
We couldn't say no to dessert...especially gelato..
It was so much fun meeting Jenn! I swear we talked and talked for hours...we had so much in common. We also think our husbands are going to be besties. We came to find out they have a lot in common too but they don't know it yet.

Crown Braid Tutorial

Friday, April 15, 2011
So Chase and I tried to make a video but apparently I can't think, talk, and braid all at once because I'm stupid. Don't mind my pretty [makeup-less] face. I had just got home from the gym and had the perfect dirty, messy hair to do this.

What you'll need:
  • day-old hair
  • small hair elastic
  • bobby pins
  • hairspray - spritz at the end
  • strong arms

Click on the pictures to see them close-up.

If you have any questions, please ask them below and I'll do my best to reply!

Roll Out!

Thursday, April 14, 2011
I asked on Facebook yesterday what you guys wore on the days where you just roll out of bed and go to work without looking in the mirror...because that's what I did. I think I just failed as a fashion blogger. I usually go for my most comfortable and classic pieces but then I remembered PJs aren't allowed at work. Lame-o. So question:  what do you guys reach for in your closet on days like that? Most importantly, do you look as good as I do? If you do, please don't tell me...because I actually spent two hours picking this out. Creativity isn't easy.

I'm wearing a Gap gray sweater ($12 - buy it!), leopard print scarf ($7 - buy similar!), J Brand black jeans ($158 - buy it!), and H&M black flats ($13).

Hello Kitty?

I love men's clothes. If you've been reading my blog long enough, you know that's not a secret. I just love loose, baggy clothes no matter how bad it looks on a petite Asian like me. It's great that my husband's skinny mickey. (He doesn't like it when I call him skinny minnie.) I can steal clothes from him and it looks almost good on me...like this chambray shirt.

Now onto the hair... I remembered this post from Ashley a while ago and couldn't stop thinking about it since! I HAD to try the Hello Kitty bow. Got this in like five hours. I hope I can do it again.

Last night Chase and I met up with Brandilyn and her husband and we went out for Korean BBQ - OF COURSE! ...the same place I chipped my tooth. (They are all intact.) Funny story....I actually knew Brandilyn's husband from my BYU-I days!! They're seriously the cutest couple! ..after me and Chase. It was so nice to finally meet her! Now I don't feel as creepy when I look at her blog 239874 times a day.

I'm wearing a leopard print scarf ($7 - buy similar!), thrifted boy's black blazer ($3), my husband's H&M blue shirt ($10), J Brand jeans ($158 - buy it!), and JCPenney white flats (free with gift cards - buy it!) with a MNG by Mango black bag (free with gift cards).

This is what I wore yesterday. Am I confusing you yet? So far most of my outfits were from the day before and I don't have enough time or energy to write two outfit posts in one day. I'm not superwoman.

This outfit was inspired by one of my pins from Pinterest...again! I love that site! I really liked this outfit because I hardly wear my skirts at my hips anymore. They're always at my waist now. It was a nice change...until I ate lunch and then I hiked it back up.

I'm wearing a secondhand blue scarf ($3), H&M white shirt ($10), handmade green skirt from a curtain ($2), and JCPenney berry heels (free with gift cards) with an MNG by Mango black bag (free with gift cards).

This weekend Chase let me go shopping. But I don't like shopping so we went thrifting...except I didn't know where the hot spots are around here. We looked up a few places on Yelp and came across two gold mines:  (1) Venus thrift store at the corner of Western and 3rd and (2) Goodwill at 1200 Vine St.

The Venus thrift store is owned by Koreans and are full of reject Korean clothes. There were TONS of pencil skirts and I was able to snag one of the few longer skirts in my size. There were also a bunch of men's suits so if your guy is regular-sized, check it out. (Mine is a rare breed of the tall skinny variety.)

The Goodwill at Vine St. was one of the cleanest thrift stores I've ever been to. I snagged these teal wedges and some black rain boots for $20. Just in time - I think I just missed L.A.'s rainy season for the rest of the century.

I've been loving Pinterest lately. This outfit is inspired by three of my pins! Bet you can't guess which ones. (You probably can.)

I forgot to ask Chase for close-ups of my crown-braid hair again. Sorry, two people. I think I need to go for a more messy look next time to not make it look like I have a bowl-cut. I'm not that Asian.

I'm wearing a Love Stitch white blouse ($4), DownEast shirt underneath (gift from my mother-in-law - buy it!), reworked JCPenney pink necklace (free with gift cards), vintage red skirt ($6), and thrifted teal wedges ($10).
