Reader Question: Cowl neck top
3/30/2011
under
reader question,
styling
Cara emailed me asking how to style this top from Kohl's:
I bought a shirt that I love, but I'm not too sure how to style it. Long sleeved shirt underneath? What kind of necklace-if any? When I first saw it, I thought it had an athletic/sporty flair to it, which I personally am not a fan of (see my post on sneakers here). But at the same time it looks comfy so I tried to go for a comf and relaxed looks incorporating current trends.
with a long sleeve underneath - I chose stripes to go against the stripes in the cowl neck top. I think a solid color would be too bold for this shirt so I'd go for similar neutral gray tones or pink. White would be good too. I personally wouldn't wear a necklace with it because of the strings. That's just me though. I suppose you could wear a choker-type necklace or even a long pendant necklace.

There's something so classic about all black with stripes. But it's nothing new... It looks a lot like this outfit. I like this one better. Mostly because of my new sunnies from Penney's. I like that they're big. I need big glasses for my big face. Proportion.

I thrifted this dress a couple weeks ago but it was like an XXXXXXXL. Something about it appealed to me so I got it. Then it sat in my sewing corner for that time until I finally decided to tackle it a couple days ago. After five hours (really... I'm so serious.), this is what I got! I forgot to upload the before pic and I'm too tired (read: lazy) to do it now so I'll show you tomorrow, maybe.

Not really a fan of this outfit today...especially in these pictures. I look frumpy from too much bagginess on top and the bottom. But I had to! It was fat day! I even wore my Lipo in a Box underneath! Help me, skinny fairy! I don't think these shoes really helped either. The cuffs just shorten my already short legs. Blahblahcomplaincomplain. Mylifesucks.

How do you like mah hurr? I don't really talk like that. I was inspired by Rebecca's crown braid. I wish "inspired" meant "the same as" but it doesn't because I'm incompetent when it comes to my hair, which is why it's always boring straight or wavy. Anyway, she has a tutorial here. Check it out. I'm out having crazy rockstar party fun with Chase and my brother (the one who just got back from a two-year Mormon mission in Spain) so I scheduled this post for Ellen who sent me an email asking how to wear these three items she had sitting in her closet:
I have come to you for help with an ugly piece of clothing I own! Actually, I have three. I was wondering what I can wear with these pieces and I know you must have some creative ideas. Please make me not regret buying the grey top. I have absolutely no idea what to wear with it because it's just so ugly. I've also attached a picture of a green vintage vest. That was hand-made by by mom. And the last one is another vest. That's my mom's.

clothes stuff
I was looking at your "closet inventory" and realizing that most of your clothes (with a few exceptions) are under $20 a piece. Where/How do you find all your good deals? - Lkatpetterson1) Patience. 2) I don't go shopping very often. 3) My limit for most items (with the exception of shoes, pants, and coats) is $20 so if it's over that I won't even bother justifying it.
What are your top three clothing stores to shop at? - Sweetpea
I love H&M, Zara, and Gap! But mostly the first two! Gap has been too simple and bland for me lately.
Now that you have a FT job and you and the hubs are settled in LA, do you think you'll be able to spend more $ on fashion? Do you have a budget for how much you spend? - eclecticflair
Honestly... I have been indulging myself a little more.. But I also got rid of a lot of my things as well. So it could be the mix of those two. But realistically... no. I don't actually have any more spending money than I did before because grad school is so gosh darn expensive and takes up a bulk of my income. So to answer your question, I do not have a budget.
Has your sense of style remained consistent throughout your life? - Evelina
No! Definitely not. My style is constantly changing and evolving. Sometimes I even look back at what I wore the week before and can't believe I wore it out in public.
Where do you find knee length dresses, and skirts for cheap? - Vanessa
Lots of patience... and I make some of my skirts on my own. I'm also short so that kind of helps.

So as you guys know with my job the food is abundant and I inevitably gained weight...8lbs to be exact. That's a lot for a little girl like me. It's not like I feel fat though. I feel great when I'm naked but once I put on clothes that fit my 8lb lighter frame I feel fat. So I've come to the conclusion that instead of trying to squeeze into skinny jeans and lamenting about my sausage thighs, I'm going to need some new clothes. So I got these slim boyfriend jeans over the weekend. And they make me feel amazing. WINNING.

Pray for Japan
3/14/2011
I don't think it's right not to post something about Japan even though everyone we know on Facebook and Twitter already have. I personally only know a few people in Japan and I THANK GOD they are not directly affected by the devastations. I've stopped reading/watching the news about it because I cry every time I do and it hurts my soul. I was talking to Chase about this yesterday and said, "What else could we do? We can donate money but what else can we do?" Sometimes money just doesn't seem enough. Then I read this article in this month's Ensign (a Mormon magazine) and I felt like it was my little answer from God and I couldn't not share it with you...
To Bind Up the BrokenheartedBy Georges A. Bonnet
In the 1990s my employment with the Church took our family to Africa, where I was assigned to help with relief efforts in Burundi, Rwanda, and Somalia. This was during a devastating period of famine, brutality, and war, and the suffering was overwhelming.
Thousands were in refugee camps. Hundreds of orphaned children lived in rudimentary shelters they constructed themselves. Cholera, typhoid, and malnutrition were ever present. The stench of waste and death added to the hopelessness.
I felt driven to offer all the help I could. The Church worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross and other organizations, but I couldn’t help wondering sometimes if our efforts were making a difference in the face of such widespread atrocity and tragedy. It was hard to shake feelings of helplessness and discouragement, and often when I retired for the night, I cried.
It was during this discouraging time that a familiar passage took on a deeper dimension for me. Citing Isaiah, it tells us that the Savior was “anointed to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that were bound” (D&C 138:42).
I had seen and spoken with many people who were “brokenhearted” in the most striking ways. They had lost their loved ones, homes, and peaceful way of life. And yet many of them showed signs of having been “bound up.” For instance, often when we approached a makeshift home, its inhabitants would ask, “Will you pray with us?” The people seemed to find happiness and peace in making supplications to the Lord.
Of course, we cannot look for the impact of the Atonement only in this life. It also comes after. I know there is redemption for the dead and resurrection for all because of the Savior. The pain we experience in this life—however extreme—will be removed and healed through the Atonement.
Mormon and Moroni, who lived in times of great slaughter and death, wrote about having hope anchored in a loving God whose mercy and justice surpass all understanding (see, for instance, Moroni 7:41–42). Studying these prophets’ statements bolstered my own faith. When I wondered if our efforts were making a difference, I felt assurance that the Savior’s grace is the ultimate redemptive power. Our best efforts may be limited, but His are infinite and eternal.
There’s no doubt that the world’s conditions create many forms of despair, but none are beyond the reach of the Redeemer to heal. All of us can have the sure hope that through the Atonement of Christ our heartscan be bound up and made whole. With this knowledge, I could go on in my work, knowing that His efforts always succeed.
All of us can have the sure hope that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ our hearts can be bound up and made whole.

This dress has gotten shorter. Or I've gotten taller. Or I'm more aware of my exposed knees. Latter Day Saints in Fashion?
3/10/2011
I recently came across these Mink Pink Latter Day Saints pieces online and my first thought was they spelled Latter-day Saints wrong. Then my second thought was should I be offended? I'm not really because of their incorrect spelling. (Yes, I'm a prude.) The items look very prairie-like...which is not my style so I don't care for them. What about you, my fellow Mormons... Are you offended by these namesake pieces? Do you like the style? And for my non-Mormon friends, does this give you a misconceived perception of Latter-day Saints?

getting to know you
...is what today is. You didn't know it was a national holiday? Well, it is now. Sorry for skipping this most important feature on my blog last month. I checked back and I only did ONE getting-to-know-you post in February! Unacceptable. It wasn't my fault. Okay, partially. I did one the first week.. The second Saturday was Chase's birthday. During the third weekend, we went to San Diego and I didn't bring my laptop. Worst. decision. ever. And last Saturday I went to that Banana-2 Conference and I had to do an outfit post and then I was too burnt out to do another post. So, see? Not my fault.
For today's segment, my question is what is your typical day like? I got this idea from Nicole. She is doing a segment on her blog called Photo Job Shadow so email her if you want to join in on her fun project! I'd also love to see!!
When I leave the house in the morning, I wake up Chase so he can take my picture. Isn't he a sweetheart? Well, he is. The days when he leaves earlier for school, I go up to our rooftop and use our trusty (so far) tripod. When we take our pictures, my car is usually within arm distance so I can hop in and zoom away and Chase is left in the dust.
