My JCPenney loot a year later and what I think

Thursday, November 10, 2011
Last summer I won $1,500 to JCPenney from College Fashion + $50 from Kansas Couture recently and I finally spent it all. I thought I'd show you all the things I spent it on and then list the rest of it to see how far I stretched it or didn't.

The clothes you've seen on the blog...

I spent some on work-out clothes and bras. I HATE bra shopping -- a necessary evil. But I did find one at JCP that I love right now. I bought two. That should cover me for another year, I think.

Then Chase and I had to be adults or something and get towels! and a doormat! and frying pans! Boo to responsibilities!

Besides all that, we bought Chase a pair of shoes that were coming apart after a week and a few pairs of jeans; we bought my brother new clothes when he got off his mission; sold some gift card money on eBay; bought presents for people... I think that's it.

So really I didn't buy much for myself like I wanted. Mostly because JCPenney doesn't cater to people my size AKA smaller than a size 4/6. ALL of their clothes were too big on me so when I did find something that fit, it was almost exciting, which is why I focused most of my credit on accessories and shoes. After all that, I'm still not a fan of JCPenney clothing. It's sub-par quality and they use cheap fabrics and materials that will either get stretched out or worn out after a few washes so it was probably a good thing most of their clothes didn't fit me. The quality of their accessories and shoes aren't that great either. (Remember my sob story about my nude platforms?) Most of my jewelry feel cheap and some of the stones have come off one of my necklaces that I had to glue back on. What I am happy with are my towels. They seem to be doing their job so far. And the frying pans seem to be pretty sturdy. I'm kind of excited to use them. I guess I'm an adult now.

Anyway, that's my two cents about JCPenney. Not to say I'm not grateful that I won both giveaways. Of course, I am! I love free stuff!!! It's just if I had real money, JCPenney would not be the first place I would think of to go shopping...for anything. One thing I regret is not buying a pair of sneakers. I actually put it off a couple times because sneaker shopping is one of the worst right next to bra-shopping and jean-shopping. K, now I'm stepping off my soapbox.

  1. I agree, its awesome if you have gift cards to JC Penney but its not somewhere I would spend my own money.  The quality is definitely lower than that of even Target, dare I say it XD

I totally agree about bra shopping... but then again who doesn't.

  5. Not to mention their sweat shop policies are atrocious ... Poor quality and poor moral ethics? Pass.

  6. Any sources? I've heard about it but never read anything first-hand.

  7. I really appreciate how honest you were about spending the giftcard. I agree with you that the clothing selection is not exactly the greatest at JCP but I do love their household section and the towels look SO FLUFFY!!! The shoe finds were awesome, though! I always have a hard time finding shoes at department stores.

  10.  Yup, sneaker shopping (for the slim and comfort (not converse) style), jean shopping, and bra shopping are probably the worst categories for me too. Boo

  11. Didn't you originally want to buy a couch or more home stuff with that money? But good for you that you were able to find a few good things in there. I don't think I've shopped at JCP since middle school, except once in awhile to go browse the MNG line (though I've never actually bought anything). If I had that gift card, I probably would have spent a good portion of it on the JCP Sephora, or on accessories like you did.

Nice towels are SUCH a luxury. I cringe when my "good towel" from Macy's is in the wash because I have to use the threadbare scratchy ones. :(

  12. Yeah, but Chase and I couldn't agree on one :/.

I know!! I'm now starting to realize towels ARE a luxury! :)

  13. I love how honest you are with your reviews! And I definitely agree. About JC Penney and about bra, sneakers and jean shopping. But oh how great all three feel when you finally find something that works!

  14. I went to JCPenny the other day and then came back a few days later to really make sure that they had only crappy clothing. Yep, they did. I feel badly saying that since I got a great dress there last year and their price points are so nice, but I think I was just very, very lucky. It's sad. But you really get what you pay for. And even when it's free, it's kinda disappointing.

One only has to type in "JCP" and "sweat shop" and Google will direct you to a handful of sources.

  17. Okay I can't quite agree with bra shopping, I love it! but I completely agree with jean shopping and sneakers. Totally boring and I hate it! ha ha, especially jeans. It's no fun to shop for jeans when you have a big booty. Especially since, skinny jeans are all the rage, makes me look so bottom heavy. Well I guess I better stop rambling and leaving the worlds longest comment. Looks like you got some cute accessories even if you not happy with jcp. : )

  18. I really honestly dont get the negativity. I buy many things at JCP and have rarely had problems.
You really just come off as stuck up.

  19. I think you need to be more specific with the brands you didn't like at JCP, because there isn't just one overall JCP brand. Don't review the whole store has having cheap quality because there are different kinds of brands within the store.

  20. Millie, I've found that across the board only a handful of items, all from various brands, are of better quality than the rest of the items I've purchased like the scarves, trenchcoat, and dress. So, yes, I generalized JCPenney as having products of cheap quality because from my experience it is true. (I've bought and returned several items because of their sub par quality as well so this is not solely based on purchases.) Perhaps not for you or for the commenter before you, but I was certainly disappointed with JCPenney's selections.

  21. It's kind of bittersweet to win a gift card from a place you don't love, isn't it?  You don't want to be ungrateful, but at the same time it can feel like a chore to use the money if you don't like their stuff--especially such an exorbitant amount of money too!  That's still pretty cool, though!  I probably would have bought MNG stuff like Kimmie said...and then, yeah, house gadgets haha.  Or Christmas presents for people?  :)

  22. I don't really have a JCP near me, so I never go in there. I really like the accessories you picked and your towels look nice :) Thanks for the honest review!

  23. I should clarify that I didn't think you sounded stuck up, I just wanted to know what brands to avoid :)

  24. Thanks for the clarification :). You can never tell online...my own voice included.

  25. I hadn't been in a JCP for years, but stopped in the other day because it was the only store that was open before 10 in the mall. All I have to say, is MNG by MANGO is now being sold by JCP!! MANGO is very popular in Spain; the quality and style and even layout of how they are selling it within JCP really helps update the department store. I've heard not all stores sell this line, so do some research before you go. The day I was there almost all of the MNG stuff was slashed by 20%, and then I had printed like 3 of the $10 off when you spend $25, and used all three at the same register. Great quality stuff at a good price!
