Transitioning Your Favorite Summer Pieces to Fall by Missy

Tuesday, October 25, 2011
Hi everyone! This is Missy from Pop of Style! I'm fairly new to the blogging scene. I just started this past spring, but I'm absolutely loving it! I started my blog to build upon my personal sense of style and make the most out of my wardrobe on a pretty tight budget! As time went on, I realized that many women have the same issue. Finding stylish and affordable clothing staples that transition from season to season is not always easy, but definitely do-able! My take on fashion is that it should be an expression of your creativity and should reflect what makes YOU happy as well as your wallet!

I'm sure at one point or another each one of you have found a few pieces in the spring or summertime that you couldn't bear the thought of leaving behind once the autumn hit. Good news! There are several ways for you to transition those pieces to wear into fall and even the winter months! One of my favorite ways to transition clothes is to layer. My other favorite way is to play with color schemes! I wanted to incorporate both with you by showing you how I did so with two timeless pieces of clothing:  the sundress and the pencil skirt.

I found this sundress while thrift shopping and I loved it's beautiful autumn-like colors and petite floral designs. Burgundy and mustard are among my favorite color combinations! To make this summer look work without much effort, I added a cropped jacket from Ann Taylor Loft on top to create a nice and light summer layering effect. I just love the look of knee socks and sandals so I added these chunky knit socks in cream (to tie the jacket together with the outfit) to my brown wedge sandals. One of my favorite things to do in the fall is see how much mileage I can get out of my summer dresses, so it's just my nature to wear them into September and October!

To transition this dress into autumn, I added warm, cozy, brown leggings and layered the same knit socks over top. Riding boots were the obvious choice for how much running around I do in a typical day, and I love the rugged contrast to the delicate floral print. Lastly, I took a mustard cardigan (probably my favorite piece for fall!) and tied it over the dress to bring out the yellow in the flower print. Can't wait to find more over-the-knee socks and tights in different colors to transition all of my summer dresses to fall!

This skirt is one of my staples for work. I love the bright, but somewhat subtle hue of this skirt and how the length makes it appropriate for everything! To me, one of the most fun aspects of fashion is experimenting with different color combinations and this skirt makes it so easy! I'm having a hard time letting go of summer brights, so I had to add a pop of pink to my summer look. This gingham sleeveless top is a great style that I've found matches with midi skirts, maxi skirts, over dresses, and tucked into jeans. The cool color scheme flows together effortlessly, but I needed a pop of color to really add some punch to the outfit. I added this pink bow waist belt as a nice contrast to break up the periwinkle/blue. I'm a big believer in mixing prints to keep it interesting, so I added these bright floral wedge sandals that included the periwinkle and pink and a yellow to brighten things up.

To transition this skirt to make it wearable in the fall, I simply changed out the necklace to a light bow tie scarf that had the mint color that was on my cardigan. One of my favorite styling tips is to find cardigans in several different colors and hues of each color. Unexpected pops of color can add instant style to any look. I used to make the mistake of simply adding a brown, beige, white or black cardigan over an outfit; but once I discovered the power of the colored cardigan, there was no turning back! I decided to tuck the cardigan in, because by doing so I was able to create a waist. A big mistake women make is chunky layering; although it has its time and place, I believe that thin layers look best as they add style, not extra bulk! Finally, to complete the fall transition in this outfit, I added my favorite suede wedge booties. The heel on these puppies isn't too high making it extremely comfortable to be on your feet all day. Remember, transitioning outfits for fall can be easy and really exciting! Breathing new life into your clothes is a challenge sometimes, but take cues from nature:  sometimes the best color schemes are the most unexpected!

  12. Very interesting Missy! Thanks! Living up here means the summers ar every short so these tricks are not only useful but vital. Otherwise we could never wear our summer pieces very long.
I love the knee-high socks in boots, I was wondering how to incorporate these in my wardrobe and hadn't find a satisfactory way yet. I think this is it!
