My Makeshift Vanity Area

Thursday, October 13, 2011
At our last apartment, we had a vanity room with a vanity table and small closet which was pretty awesome I'm not gonna lie. I never had a little table to sit at to do my makeup and get prettied up. We don't have that option at our new place so I had to make do. We had a bunch of shelves between our doorway and bathroom probably for towels and such. I didn't like the idea of just stowing things away on these shelves because they are viewable from our living room so I wanted them to be presentable as well as functional. I turned the two bottom shelves into my jewelry/makeup vanity area.

I used the same idea for necklace holders from our last apartment but only used three nails for my bigger necklaces. They spill over onto the shelf and I kind of like it like that for now. The smaller necklaces (as well as all my earrings) are stowed away in the brown jewelry box my in-laws got for me as a birthday present. My bracelets are in Anthropologie cups I got last year with my gift card earnings. My makeup and hair things are stowed away in white IKEA bins in the top left.

How do you organize your makeup/jewelry?

  1. Cute! I always love seeing how people organize their things. I don't very much jewelry at all, but I hung up some of my costume necklace on the wall as "decoration" in my tiny bedroom.

  3. I love this! it looks like a vintage bed and breakfast or something.
my stuff is a mess, i have a huge jewelry DRAWER.  and everything gets tangly.  But all of my favorite items stay out in a vintage teacup from a thrift store.  I love what you've done here...makes me want to reorganize.

  4. If you ever get tired of seeing what's on the shelves, you can always get another rod like in your closet and put up a curtain here. A friend of mine did that in her apartment and it's really cute if you pick a fun fabric.

  7. My jewelry is stored in a little box with three shelves. And my makeup is stored in a seperate drawer, though I keep my makeup brushes and the makeup I use every day on my desk.

  8. Cute!  I have an "accessories wall" in the back of my closet.  I should post about it sometime.

  10. Love it! I have a vintage printer's drawer for type that I painted/distressed, and put cup hooks in the little nooks and crannies for earrings and necklaces. I hung this by decorative chain in front of a useless window (it doesn't look out on anything, my landlord built a storage shed in front of it) that I swagged with pretty scarves. So it's sparkly and pretty instead of just the back of a lame storage shed.

  11. That's clever.  I need to do something to give my wife more storage for necklaces.  She has a plexiglass case that allows her to hang them up--but I still find them all over the house, on our dresser, you name it.  Maybe a hanging rack on our bedroom wall would work--something like those nine peg hat racks.  Hmmmm...thanks for getting me thinking about it. =)

  12. This is pretty awesome considering that my tiny SF apartment has absolutely no room for a luxury like this :( I keep my makeup on a small console across the toilet

  13. I love those Anthro cups - they are so pretty. Your vanity place looks so clean and organized. Mines is a mess compared to yours. Thanks for sharing!

  17. I used to do that at our first apartment! I constantly worried something would drop in the toilet though!
