Making the most of small closet space

Wednesday, October 12, 2011
It's almost been two months since my husband and I moved in to our new apartment and with it comes the obligatory closet post...especially since the last one was soooo long ago!! Four months? Seriously? Ridic.

Soo... here it is. If you didn't notice, it's about half the size of our last closet. At first I was okay with it because I thought I didn't have a lot of clothes. Keyword?? THOUGHT. I was always so proud of the fact that my wardrobe was so small and that someone even called it minimalist once upon a time!!! The thrifting every few weeks and not having a consignment store nearby to get rid of unwanted clothes resulted in a slowly growing wardrobe. I think it's time for a "Shop Elaine's Closet" soon.

Right now I have it divided by type:  pants folded on the top; dresses and long cardigans on the far left; tops on...top; sweaters, blazers, and skirts on the bottom. Other than that, there is no color coordination because I change my mind about my outfits too often to keep it organized.

(By the way, that box under the cheap plastic box full of my bags and purses is full of picture frames that are not up on our naked walls yet. But it looks so good on display in our closet that it may just stay there forever.)

Another closet accessory we had at our last place was the over-the-door hanger where I could throw my belts and house clothes on. But those stupid hangers don't fit in any of our new doorways!! So we have a bunch of them if anybody wants them. I am asking for $100 each. That is a discount. Anyway, since we couldn't use them and the hooks on the left inside our closet wouldn't hold all my scarves and belts without getting in the way of my clothes, I bought a multi-use hanger from IKEA that does a pretty good job.

Because we had less space than our last place, I had to buy a hanging closet rod to double my side of the closet and that's where my sweaters, blazers, and skirts go...for now. Best. invention. ever. If you guys don't have one of these double closet rods, get it! It uses up that bottom half of your closet where you usually throw all your clothes and shoes last minute when people are coming over. It also makes a great hiding spot for Rosie

P.S. If you want to see my past closets, here is my first ever closet post with an updated post a year later and then my most recent closet.
P.P.S. Melissa's closet plus tips on how to max out our wardrobe.

  1. My daughter-in-law is struggling with not enough closet space. I cannot wait to show her this post. I like the double closet rod idea. I am not sure where you got that and how you installed it.

  2. I feel your pain! The hubs and I share a one bedroom apartment, meaning we share a dinky closet as well. You definitely have to get creative with how you store your clothes!

  9. Nice job. I've got plenty of space in my closet but I need a little more organization. I REALLY need a shelf like this above my racks.

  10. We just moved too, and we've downgraded from a small but ridiculously functional walk-in to a tiny tiny tiny closet with one shelf and one rod and a few sad rusty hooks someone thoughtfully added.  So when we moved in I ripped out the shelf and bar, painted the inside a color that wasn't dingy institutional beige, and added two shelves and bars, one higher than normal and one lower to accommodate all of his clothing (more than mine!!!) and mine.

  12. I keep thinking I should get rid of stuff so I can really maximize the room my sister and I share.  Then I look at my stuff and I think, well, I like it and I wear it...sometimes.

  14. I love these closet posts because I am an internet stalker, which is better than the kind that hides in your bushes.  I seriously need to get rid of stuff in my closet, partly because of atmospheric conditions and partly because, for real?  What was I thinking when I kept that top?  I'd love to have a minimalistic wardrobe except in the shoes and scarves department.  I will continue to hoard those items.

  19. Hey Ellen, it comes with two hooks and adjustable ropes at both ends of the rod so you can fit it into any space however tall or wide you want! It's awesome that it's adjustable. You can get it at The Container Store. I think I got mine for like $12?
