I originally wore this polka-dot top with my striped skirt because I wanted to "try new things" - isn't that what fashion blogging is about? ...but then I chickened out at work and changed into a spare white t-shirt I had in my gym bag. It might have even been a little smelly. But that's not important. I definitely felt more comfortable in a t-shirt than in this bold mix of patterns. Which one are you? The bold mixer or the play-it-safer?

I'm wearing a JCPenney scarf (free), JCPenney top (free), Forever 21 skirt ($6), thrifted wedges ($10), and vintage bag ($15).

I love the pattern mix!! They are both in the same colors and the dot is small and unobtrusive. It's not like you're mixing a crazy-traditional Scottish plaid with chintz or something. ;)

I think the polka dots and stripes combo looks wonderful, but I understand your need to change due to not being comfortable.
I love to take a chance ... but if my husband gives me that, "Maybe you've gone too far" look I know that I need to calm it down a little bit
I play it safe but I like to call it "classic". :) I think the scarf pops more with the white but both look great on you!
I would like to say that I'm bold and daring...but I'm not. I'm a safe dresser (or as I like to call it - classic) - BUT I will say that I prefer your polka dot top with this outfit :)
I really like the polka dot+stripes mix. You should try it again sometime. But the white t-shirt looks real cute too. I'm not much of a pattern mixer but I think if anything sometimes I am TO bold with my color choices. But I think your big bright pink scarf is perfect.
I LOVE the polkadots with the skirt, but I get it. I chicken out at work too because I don't want to stick out too much. I don't like to bring too much attention to myself at work.

I really like the mix of patterns. Be brave; you look fabulous!
aww, i actually really love both tops with that skirt! ...but, i completely sympathize with being uncomfortable. when i don't like what i'm wearing i can't think about anything else. it's amazing what an effect it has on your confidence!

can i go with you on your next vintage bag shopping run? i need me a good vintage leather bag...
I am a little of both, but I really like this outfit. Also, I bought that skirt because of you! :)
I really like both tops with the skirt, but I would have probably gone with the solid top. I'm juuuuust now staring to think of stripes as a sort of neutral pattern, but I'm just too scared to dress TOO crazy. No one want to be the Ms. Frizzle of the office. :)
Nice mix of prints.
im obsessed over striped skirts!!
I like the pattern mixing. So cute! Don't chicken out next time ;)
I love the stripes and dots look! I've been trying to pull it off myself, but I cant find a striped skirt reasonably priced in my size.

I'm definitely into more subtle mixes. But I really like the polka dots and stripes. Because they are both black and white they look great together!
I think I'd mix it up...and I wouldn't bring a shirt so if I chicken out I won't have anything to change it. :D you look great either way though! I want that skirt!
I like both of them! The polka dots are more fun but the plain white looks more comfortable. I think the pink scarf makes the outfit, though!
I love the first look! I always feel so concious about mixing print but you've done it well!
polka dots and pink? yes please!

Polka dots and pink?! oh yes. theres's the winner every time!

I like the first look! The simple black and white, plus the fact that the dots are a small pattern, make it work.

I'm the play-it-safer. I don't really see why we should join the hordes of women who mix patterns only for the sake of being a fashion blogger! Everything's fashion. So if we like to play it safe, what's wrong with that? It's our style and we like it. I say: do whatever you feel like doing, not whatever fashion bloggers do. Be yourself. :)
PS: I'm a bold mixer in terms of colors. I would have worn a red shirt instead. But again... we should wear whatever we please. :)
I like the dots and stripes! I might wear them together, but that skirt would not look good on me due to too much hip :( maybe if it were A-line. I have a black blouse with tan dots and a black floral skirt (flowers are subtle and tan and red, mostly) that I wear together.
Cute! I'm definitely the play-it-safer and would've definitely worn the second outfit, lol.
Bold mixer all the way!
Elaiiiiiiine! That first look was fantastic! I pattern mix like crazy but I know it's hard if you aren't used to a lot of pattern mixing. I say give your outfit another chance. Maybe wait until it's cooler and throw a cardigan on top so it isn't quite so overwhelming? That might help! :)
I loved the pair! Go all the way next time you looked fab!
The pattern mixing looked great! Don't chicken out next time.
I am usually safe but will get a bold combo that I love and will wear that... probably depends on my mood. :)
I love the shoes and scarf. They add the perfect color pops to a black and white outfit.

I love it both ways! You have created two very cute looks, I heart mix and match patterns!

depends on the day! sometimes I both! I think its important to be comfortable, and I really honestly like both looks! I like wearing crazy patterns together though. My motto is, if I can make an elderly man roll his eyes, I've done my job right. :)
I'm a wuss, too! lol I like the plain white top better. : )
I think I like the pattern mix better. The white shirt does look really nice too. A little safe but nice.

i wish i was a bold mixer, but i tend to be more safe about it. love both looks though!
Love both looks! Can you tell me how you tied that scarf? I have some great scarves, but I'm a mess when it comes to tying them!
I have been stepping out of the box and mixing patterns, fun to do but also feels wrong. I like the mix you did and the addition of that bright pink scarf. Nice Job!
I'm a play it safer, sadly. But I'm trying to be bolder lately, by the way I liked both looks. Awesome!

Lovely outfit! I really admire how you manage to pull off polka dots and stripes mixed together :)

i like to wear as many prints as possible.. i feel more comfortable in them than in block colours.
play it safer all.the.way! i actually like the white Tshirt look better than the first shirt but great outfit as always!
you pulled off the polka dot/stripe combo so effortlessly! :) you have rocked much bolder things, so i am surprsied you switched it out for a plain tee!
Depends on my mood. Some days I feel like mix patterns, bright colors & try something different. And others I go with a white tee, a basic bottom & brown or black accesories. Anyway, I love the way you mix polka dots & stripes, I think it's really stylish.
I'm pretty bold. I definitely noticed a lot of people staring at me last week when I wore a particularly bold pattern mix and that can be a bit to deal with but you get used to it, heh. I think the polka dots and stripes were awesome though, you should totally have rocked that out all day.
I'm fairly bold...so I was surprised how much I loved this with the plain white T. Super cute, E.
while i love your outfit both ways, i REALLY like the mixed prints! i don't think it is too much since they're in the same color family, and the polka dots are little. but i think i'm one of the bold pattern mixers. i don't wear a lot of patterned things, so when i do, it makes me want to put on ALL of my patterned things at once. i probably look crazy though, lol.
Lovin' it both ways, the polka dots and stripes are my favorite though!
So effortless but funky. I was always very guarded with mixing patterns, but lately have been venturing into the unknown :) Try florals mixed with stripes! btw lovelovelove your blog.
I think I like the plain white tee best. I guess that makes me more of a minimalist. I'd like to try pattern mixing, but I think that will be easier to do in the fall - floral shirt, striped sweater, etc.
You're too cute
I'm usually the "play it safe" type but every once in a while I go bold! I think you should wear what you feel comfortable in. Maybe you just need to wear that mixed print outfit on the weekend a couple times and then you'll feel bold enough to take it to work.
Lidi @ Eclectic Flair
Oh, I love the polka dots and stripes! But I've never been courageous enough to wear it (nor do items in my closet allow for the combo to exist) so I understand the hesitation!
Oh wow! I loved the polkadots with the stripes! I usually play it safe, but I've been having fun mixing prints lately.
I always play it safe. Part of that though is that I love a classic look. Personally, I like the solid top better but that is just me. Either way, you looked cute :)
I love the bold mix, but I am a safe-player :P
I think I am both. Some days I like the bold mix, other days not so much. I love both looks with this skirt - surprise surprise. I think it's great you know what you like and feel comfortable in!
I think the bold mix of patterns looks great on you!

Hahaha that's hilarious!!
Me too! Ugh! It's like a sickness!
TOTALLY :)
NICE!
Who's Ms. Frizzle?!?
Thank you!! I can do colors but I can't do pattern mixing.. At least not bold ones...yet!!
I just wrapped it around twice and knotted it!
Haha, I feel the same!
You mix prints like nobody's business!!!
I think you're right.
I love the pattern mixing...it looks great and interesting! It's not too bold at all since the colors are neutral and it's like they were destined to work together. =)
