Dresses are Twice as Nice by Jenni

Tuesday, August 16, 2011
Hi everyone! I'm Jenni from Engineered Style, and 2011 is the year I discovered dresses. Okay...so not really, BUT 2011 is the year that I started wearing them for more than just special occasions. See, I don't like shorts, and capris or jeans in Texas heat is no bueno. (We're going on 30+ days of 100+ degree heat!) Dresses are a lot cooler than pants (yeah, I know--groundbreaking), so I started looking for some casual options. I bought a few and realized that unless I wanted to go broke, I needed to find other ways to wear them. That's where skirts come in. Many dresses do a great job doubling as skirts. Plus, since they don't hit at the waist, they are a cooler and more comfortable option. Here are a few selections that I pulled from my own closet, and I hope that it helps you re-engineer your own wardrobe!

This is a super casual dress that I found while thrifting, but a boyfriend sweater, flower pin and heels can dress it up. On the other hand, I wore the outfit on the right to a cookout by simply grabbing a button-up from the closet and knotting it in the front. I frequently wear button-ups to work, so I like to find other ways to incorporate them into my weekend wardrobe.

Sometimes I wish I worked in an environment where I could wear this every day, but as an engineer on construction sites, my work wear is mostly jeans and khakis. However, I'm sure a lot of you do work in formal environments, and there's nothing more classic than a black dress or skirt. Why not have both in the same piece of clothing? I actually bought this dress for the groundbreaking of my current project, and I have a feeling it's going to serve me well at many work functions!

I wear this dress all.the.time. It's a light, airy fabric perfect for summer. I also think it'll make a great transition this winter with a bright colored tight. For an afternoon lounging around with friends, I like to throw a tshirt over it to make it even more comfortable and casual.

Thanks for having me, Elaine! I hope your very fashionable readers have fun re-engineering their own dresses!

  4. One thing about dresses is that they are more comfortable to wear when I feel bloated or have gained a few pounds! I liked seeing the examples of making the same dress look different using different accessories.

  5. Dresses are a god-send in the heat. And I love that leggings are a trend right now b/c I can wear them to keep me from flashing everyone while I wrestle my kid.

  8. I love it how she used one piece and turn it in to multiple outfits.  I love doing that myself and been learning more and more from the blogs I follow. Thanks always for the inspirations!

  9. Do the all layers get hot? I have plenty of dresses, and I HAVE thought of this, but I always thought I'd be too hot in all the layers. Maybe not though.

  14. I'm normally a "cold" person, so I typically welcome the extra layers.  You should really try it though!  A tshirt vs a cardigan add about the same amount.  I'd love to see what you come up with!
