How to style a maxi skirt in two ways

Saturday, May 21, 2011
Audrey emailed me a million years ago about this Old Navy jersey maxi skirt and I'm just finally getting around to it. (Sorry, Audrey!) She is 14 years-old and needs help with ideas on how to wear it on a daily basis and to church while still keeping it appropriate for her age. If you are 14 and own a maxi skirt, you're already cooler than me.

For your everyday activities, I immediately saw stripes, white tennis shoes, and a linen backpack for a comfy, casual look!

For church I was thinking a classy, bohemian look with a loose flowy top, sparkly sandals or flats, and a fun scarf.

What tips do you have for Audrey for styling this maxi skirt?

  1. Wow, she sounds like a stylish 14 year old! My advice would be for her to try it on with all the tops in her closet, I think she'll be surprised by how many outfits she can create. She should try it with belts, without belts, long necklaces... the possibilities are endless. I'm thinking that pairing it with a racerback tee, a long necklace and flat sandals might be great for a hot summer day.

All your suggestions are great.  Black goes with everything!.  I'm thinking a nice solid colour blouse with a coordinating scarf.  White blouse with a pop of colour in the scarf is nice too.

  5.  I'm fairly close to her age (17) so I agree with the items you mentioned. I would suggest that with the shirt, keep it relaxed and casual. Adding a scarf will make it a bit classier. Audrey, I'd love if you stopped by my blog! I try hard to give girls inspiration with my modest outfit posts.

I'm trying to think of what I was wearing at 14.  I believe I was still wearing matching sets from the JC Penney catalog.  :)  LOL.  But if I was 14 today and I had that cute black maxi skirt, I would probably pair with with a cute, simple graphic t-shirt and black flip flops or sandals and then pop on a summery scarf.  Have fun with it, Audrey!

  10. Those are some really good tips. We have a skirt just like that where I work, and pairing with a casual shirt like that is an amazing idea I'll have to steal! ;)

  11. Love the idea for mixing it with a long striped shirt. :)

I also think she is way cooler than me owning a maxi at age 14. lol

  14. I was thinking you could take it in another direction and make it more "rock"-y  with a jean/ leather jacket, converse, and a graphic tee. Soft and boho like Elaine styled it is perfect too.
