Unknowing Designer Inspiration by Kari

Hi everyone!  Aren't you glad that Elaine asked me to be a contributor only to love you and then leave you forever?  Sooo great!  Well I'm back (I know it hasn't been that long since my intro post) but I'm going to try to pop up here more often.  Promise.  So last weekend I went shopping at one of my favoritest stores Madewell.  They were having an additional 25% off all sale items and something had to be done.  I think I tried on just about every sale item.  The workers there were loving me!  As I was about to leave I spied this little gem:

I can't find it on their website so I'm not sure if it was just one sale at my store or what but I couldn't resist.  I love me some nautical flair.  I've pretty much been wearing this baby every day since I got it.  Seriously even to work.  Now, I don't know about you guys but I don't really have a bajillion bucks to buy designer stuff like ever.  But yesterday when I was wearing my new necklace a girl asked me where I got it from.  I told her and she said, "Oh it's a nice rendition of the Phillip Lim one."  What!?  So I googled as fast as my fingers could take me and look what popped up:

Gorge.  I don't have $225 bucks to spend on that guy but I paid one tenth of the price for my Madewell necklace and it has a similar look and feel.  What do you guys think?  Would you wear either one?  How would you style it?  Is this a sweet designer on a dime find?

Phillip Lim is my favorite Asian designer but I do agree he is a bit pricey :T The madewell piece is definitely a fashion steal!

I actually would only wear the one your bought. I like more modern, and streamlined pieces. I'm all about designer looks for less. Not necessarily knock offs but things inspired by high end designers.

Both are pretty, but I like the less expensive one best--and not because it's less expensive. I just like it better.

The first one is best, definitely.  The other one is clunky and "overdesigned."
