Reader Question: Red Pants

Friday, January 21, 2011
I got a question from Alexandra, a graduate student and research assistant, about how to wear red pants. This is easy:  I don't know either. Though I have been eyeing some red skinnies ever since I saw Kendi sporting some. Alexandra has red straight-leg work pants. I personally don't like or know how to style straight-leg pants unless they're baggier...then you can just roll them up, but she said hers were a tighter fit.

My first option would be to hem them so they're cropped.

My second option would be to skinnify them. You can roll or cuff them at the bottom to get the cropped look with this option too.

And here are some extra things I would consider pairing with red pants!

tips

  • As you can see, I chose a lot of neutral (cream) shirts or blue. I also have a few pink in there too. In my opinion, you can go three ways with this:  1) let the red pants be the focal point (neutrals), 2) complementary colors (blue, green), or 3) compete with the red pants (pink, orange). If you go with neutrals (probably the easiest), spice it up a little bit with a fun belt or layering jewelry.
  • You can also see how Kendi wore her red pants here, here, and here.
  • What tips do you have for styling red pants for Alexandra?

  1. If I had red pants, I'd be really cheesy and go with the primary colors: blue top and yellow flats. Like I said, cheesy.

I also LOVE purple with red, so maybe a deep purple top.

  7. love my red jcrew cords. i feel like you dont want to scream "HEYYYYY LOOK AT MEEE IM WEARING BRIGHT PANTS! AND IM PULLING THEM OFF!" you should definitely go the neutrals route. I temper mine with a denim/chambray button up, heather or stone colored cardigans, and brown boots for the winter. im a sucker for a nautical vibe also.

  9. i would pretend that your pants aren't red at all and style them from there... you might be surprised what you can pair with red, it helps to forget about the color for a minute to clear your head... sometimes i get fixated on what color something is and i get stuck...

  12. I have some red cords from the GAP and my dilemma is whether or not to have them altered. I feel like they are too long. But I am not sure if they are supposed to be. I will prob end up shortening them.
I like red pants with everything from t shirts to cute little button ups. Here is one way I wore mine

  17. I love Kendi's red pants and I think red pants are a great idea. I own red pants that have been cuffed to be turned into long capris. Mine have a looser fit and I'll wear them with sandals and black in the summer. I don't like a lot of red but it can make a great statement when you want to wear something simple but with a lot of impact.

  19. I'm all about being as nautical as humanly possible, so I'd pair it with something navy and/or white.

I actually own bright red tights (so similarish kind of.) and here's how I did them.

  21. http://scrapandrun.blogspot.com/2010/08/11-of-30-monday-august-2.html one way I styled my red pants. I have had them a year and wear them 1-2x a month and always do it differently. Mine are not skinnies or cropped so it can give another perspective.

Scroll through my <a href="http://colleen.akwire.net/_clothes/?year=2010&month=8>calendar site</a> to see how I've done it. I got the red pants last January.
