Saturdays are for getting to know each other

For today's Getting To Know You series, I was thinking we should start from the beginning...like where were you born? and where else have you lived?

I was born in Korea (NOT North!!!!! Seriously the most annoying question I get after "What are you?") - Seoul to be exact. Then when I was two or three (I don't remember.. I was a baby.) we immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We lived in the ghetto for a while because that's where fresh immigrants go. Then it got dangerous - like there-are-now-prison-bars-on-all-the-windows-and-doors-in-my-old-neighborhood dangerous. So we moved into the suburbs of Philly. Then several years after that we moved further into the super-suburbs (borderline countryside) where my parents are currently residing. I've also lived in Idaho and Utah for school but they don't really count because it's embarrassing. Now I'm in Los Angeles and loving-hating it.

So what about you? Where were you born? and where else have you lived?

  4. I was born in Michigan and have lived there more times out of my life than anywhere else. But I am an Army brat, who grew up to join the Marines, and then took a job that moves me around a lot. I have lived in 7 countries and 24 states and more cities than I remember. I am catching up to my mom! LOL!

Normally, the most difficult question for me is "What is your address?" and "List your last 3 addresses." The longest time span that I have EVER spent in one place is 17 months. A time span that long is uncommon for me.

Moving around is a bit unstable, but I always have my kids with me so I feel grounded.

  5. Hehe. I have a few dear friends who are of Korean decent and they get that a lot too.. North and South mix up. I just wish that the whole North and South issue ends already.

Just a little about myself..I was born in the Philippines and moved to Australia when I was very little. Am still living in Sydney but have lived in London as well. I miss London.

    Am definitely a new follower.

    Drop by some time. x

I was born in the south of England (Dorset) and lived in the same house my whole life until I moved away for uni. I moved 4 hours north to Leicester and absolutely loved it. I've now moved back home to take a gap year and a postgrad course. But after that I'll be heading towards London with my boy :)

  10. I was almost born in Hong Kong but my mom immigrated to the states so I was born in Rhode Island. Then we moved to Ohio a year later where I spent 21 years there before I moved to southern Cali where I now live. I'm actually up in Ventura County, just north of you.

  13. I was born in Romania, the so called country of Dracula. Have been living there for 25 years until this year when I decided to move to the UK with my hubby and start a complete whole new life in a country that we've gotten to love while each studying English and English culture and civilisation at school. And because I am like this huge fan of the Beatles, haha.

I spent some time in Germany and Uruguay as well, until I finally moved to Connecticut for college, and then moved up to Boston for grad school. And now here I am.

  20. OMG, I HATE THAT. When people are like "where are you from?" I know they are asking nationality, but it just bugs the heck out of me. I always reply "I'm from Seattle" but then they're like "no, where are you from?" UGH.

I was born and raised in Seattle, lived here most of my life, went to school and graduated here, got married here, and still live here. I did have a short stint where my dad took our family to Taiwan (where my parents grew up) to live for 2 years when I was in elementary/middle school, but then we came back.

  21. Born in Oregon, went on a mission trip all around the US where I met my husband. I went to college in Michigan for four years and then moved back to Oregon! I love Mount Angel, the town I live in now. Way better than Portland, seriously.

  22. More annoying than what are you is are you Chinese/Puerto Rican/Japanese? Or when people just start speaking to me in Spanish. I'd rather someone just ask me what my ethnicity is than assume it's something it might not be.

I was born in Hawaii. A month later we moved to Nebraska, then Alaska, then to California. After that we move BACK to Hawaii, then to New York and my dad finished off his military career in Germany. When I left my dad's house I moved to Florida and then Kentucky and then to Indiana for school with a brief stint in Georgia. I currently live in Indiana. I'm thinking about moving though. Phew that was a lot.

  23. Where were you born? and where else have you lived?

I was born in Rochelle, GA. A very, very, *very* small town in the sticks. I hated living there. But anyways I lived there for roughly 12 years of my life. I moved to Louisiana where I lived for about 2 months, I also had moved to Montana where I lived for 4 months and then I moved back to GA. And then I moved back to Montana where I have been living for the past oh say almost 3 years. Warning: Do not ever move to Louisiana, you will hate it. The only good there is the food. Literally. :]

I traveled around a bit after college, living for three or four months at a time in various states while doing biological field work (like Missouri, Arkansas, Texas) and finally ended up in Texas in 2008. I kind of want to move back to Ohio, though.

  31. I was born in Sacramento, CA and have lived less than 5 miles from the property I grew up on almost my entire life. I grew up in a rural area and I would never want to live anywhere else.

After high school my boyfriend went to Arizona for school, so I lived there (in the Phoenix area) for about 8 months. Other than that I have lived in the Sacramento area my entire life. I went to college and grad school here, got a job here, and bought a house here. Sounds pretty boring compared to other's answers - I used to feel so boring. I am a white girl from the country - that is my ethnicity. Nothing exciting. But, I LOVE being a country girl!

I always get the question "What are you?" (meaning nationality of course, not whether I'm an alien/human or even sexual orientation for that matter). I'm Filipino but for some reason, I look like every other Asian race to other people. I always make people guess and guess what I could be. It sometimes takes up to 4 guesses and then I let them give up. It makes me laugh inside instead of getting annoyed. Haha.

  36. I think it's cool that you've lived in so many different places! Even if you don't remember Korea much, it's still cool. I have lived in the same place my entire life. Good ole Denham Springs, Louisiana! It's outside of Baton Rouge, and if you don't know where that is, it is an hour away from New Orleans. I have grown up on a farm but we are close enough to "city" things that we are not considered country. I like the balance! Close enough to the mall to make quick trips, but far enough that we enjoy open air, trees, and far away neighbors.

I know I said this last week, but I like this idea of getting to know you things!

  37. Wow that's so exciting. I was born in America but my parents are British - making me a dual citizen, which is fairly handy! My family then moved back to England when I was 2, where we lived in a village until we were 8. I then moved to Cambridge (yes, the city with the famous university), and next year I'll be moving to college in Birmingham.

  39. I was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - the nation's capital. When I was about 2 months old, we moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where my parents worked in the Canadian high comission (embassy). My younger sister was born in Nairobi.

We came back to Ottawa when I was 4 years old, and I've pretty much lived here ever since, except an 18-month stint in Toronto in '99 - '00.

  40. I was born in Iacanga, Brazil. A tiny, tiny, tiny town in the countryside of Sao Paulo. We moved quite a bit growing up to Botucatu, Agudos, Bauru and finally when I was 12 we moved to the north of Brazil to tiny, tiny Acailandia, Maranhao. I hated it there... more than I could imagine.

When I was 15 I gave my dad 2 options: he could send me back south to Sao Paulo to a boarding school or to London/Australia/USA/Canada to be a foreign exchange student.

I wound up in Utah, lived with an LDS family for my sophomore year of High School. Moved back to Brazil and a month later my whole family moved to Miramar, FL where my parents still are living near Ft. Lauderdale. Maybe I should say just my mom and brother, because my dad does go back and forth every 20 days or so to Brazil.

I then went to UT for spring break during my first year in college and met the husband. Got married a year later, moved to UT again. Then I talked the husband into moving outta there and we've been in Dallas, Texas ever since. We love/hate it. Hate summers, love everything else. :D

I was born in FL, exactly halfway between Tampa and Orlando. I've lived here in Lakeland, in Tampa and in N. FL as a kid. 90. I've gotten the "What are you?" question - and I HATE IT!!! What a rude way of asking someone's ethnic or national origin. Another person has said, "Are you anything besides American?" Ummm, . . what exactly do you mean by that? - that "American" means "White," and if I don't look completely white, then I must be something "besides American?" Sorry for venting, it just bugs me. Oh, and by the way, I'm 1/4 Korean, 1/4 Mexican, and 1/2 German/Dutch. Weird mix, i know. But people can tell I'm not "completely white," that's why they ask. And I've only lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Iowa (and briefly in Arkansas), and going to be moving to another state in a year. I love your blog, by the way.

  94. I was Brooklyn, NY. I grew up in a Caribbean-American neighborhood. (Both of my parents are from Trinidad & Tobago.) When I was 15, my mom's job relocated to Delaware. I went to UD for college on scholarship, worked for two years in Baltimore, MD then returned to UD for grad school since it was free again. Still in DE; I prefer living in the suburbs in close viscinity to cities.

  97. I totally didn't know you were from the Philly area, but it makes sense now since you know Christine. I didn't give a lot of thought to exactly where you guys met obviously.. I was born and raised in the Philly suburbs, and I'm still here except I'm a little farther out in a more rural area now, but I absolutely love it.

I was born in the Bay Area, CA but moved to Small Town, Ut at three. Lived my whole life there, met my husband in high school, moved to Logan for college then moved this year to SLC (FINALLY!) and this is where I live now. Woot!

  102. I was born at the West Point Military Academy, and am actually "famous" for being the first baby born in one of the houses, not the hospital (long story). I've since lived in Ohio, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Ontario. Now I live someplace else, but it's a loosely kept secret online for professional purposes.

  111. I was born in the suburbs of Chicago- so small town near a much larger city (yay cities!), and then went to college in Michigan (East Lansing). Now I live in Houston (back to the city! but not one as good as Chicago since I don't do well with heat/humidity and you have to drive everywhere. Although the cost of living here is pretty fabulous for someone on a grad student's stipend.)

  116. Next time someone asks "What are you?" you can say "Norwegian!" or "Danish! Finnish!" Something so typically opposite of Korean. I bet you'd get a lot of dead serious "Wow. Yeah. You look Norwegian."
I was born in Logan, raised in AZ, lived in MO and MI while my dad was in school. Served a mission in Germany and now live back in UT for now. We'll see where we end up! Mr. Darcy and I are definitely western US folks vs eastern US folks, though we want to retire to either New Zealand or Switzerland/Germany.
