Orange you green?

A long time ago, I saw a Gap ad with Sarah Jessica Parker in it and she had a cardigan wrapped around her tiny child-like body with a broach. And today I tried to copy it. But it looked like this...AKA a hot mess. I think I need some more practice..

Love those colours together - not sure about the brooch thing but I'm sure you'll make something work :P

Inception is such a good movie!!!!

Oh you got new glitter flats!?

I always wanted to try the broach thing!

cute! orange and green go well together. ^^

I have a serious weakness for orange and green together. It makes me think of citrus, my wedding, and summer - all good things in my book. Also, I think the brooch looks kind of cool, but I can see how this would be the kind of look that requires serious experimentation.

Practice makes perfect but, I think the brooch still looks cute!

May I make a suggestion? I've done this look before and I recommend that you *pull* the side you want to front side your pinning all the way to your side. That way, in essence, you're creating a wrap with your cardi and then pinning it in place with the brooch. I normally use two or three brooches to keep it in place and also tend to use old cardigans because I hate pulling on new ones.

Hope that helps!

I think its on the brink of working...i totally remem that ad, the key is she had multiple(3)broaches...oh yeah and no hips to call her own, and her mid-rif out & about. I think it would look equally adorable with one of those "mormon" clips..you know the 3 rosettes together...seen here http://whippycake.com/store/568b.jpg, but worn w/ a pin on your hip. enough..im done

You look great but yeah... the brooch thing, I am not such a fan.
You're still cute though.

Jane Milton, THANK YOU!!!! Yeah, I realized I had to really pull to even have the one side over this far! And this is an Old Navy cardigan so we all know their stuff isn't the best quality... I will keep practicing. In the mean time, I'm going to have to scrounge up some more broaches too! Thanks for the suggestion!

Girl, your style and body rock, so you look fab in everything! I do love how you're bringing on bits of "bling" to your ensembles though - the sequin flats are awesome!

I'm sure SJP had professional stylists help her! She didn't do it herself :)

I like the bright colors of your shirts! I wish I was in a warmer place now.. it's a bit cold here :(

I like the colourfulness and liveliness of the green and orange, and the more classic black and white prevents it from looking too gaudy. The shoes are literally a sparkling detail!

I think you did a good job wrapping the cardi with a brooch. Definitely much better than I could have ever done it.

What a great combination of colors. I really, really like it :)

I wear my cardis with brooches too but I found that it works best with cardis that don't have any buttons, otherwise it gives me "trying too hard" vibe because the button holes just look awkward. But that's just me.

Love the brooch idea and you're rocking this colour combination :)

I love your black jeans and really want a pair myself! I just have one weird concern/question.. How often do you wash them and what do you use? I've had dark/black jeans in the past but they fade fast and end up looking blah. Please reply! Thanks!

hey, I love your blog and your style, especially the fact that you don't wear a lot of superexpensive stuff and still you look awesome every day. I'm a student so I don't have so much money either, I find it very hard to look nearly as good as you and I think it is because I am not as skinny and perfectly shaped :(

well the brooch is perfectly in place Elaine...and the combination of Red and Orange is beautiful...and your scarf fits the outfit too...

I wish I can be as chic and comfy as you are in going to work...

i remember that ad! i tried it too, and it ultimately worked with 3 brooches and a few pins on the inside too. i first wore the sweater inside out and pinned it, then i gently took it off and pinned the broochs on the outside. it was a lot of work. but seriously hott.

christa @ enSTYLEpedia said...

i like it...it's kind of pulled and it looks effortless, like maybe it was on purpose or maybe it was an accident but you're so totally cool and awesome that you don't even have time to care. kinda like that.

I think that you need to tuck the inside t-shirt in to make the look work.

I think you did a great job with it. Great color combination btw. I love that it is in the holiday spirit without being too costume-y.

Hot mess? I don't think so... I love it! It really flatters your tiny body pulling the cardi over like that and the brooch adds a bit of sparkle. I really wish I could pull that off, actually.

Ps. I thought you got rid of the shopstyle ads?

Elaine said...

five foot something, I know I said that... I've been getting comments in my survey that people wanted a way to buy similar items and seeing that 90% of my closet isn't recent, I figured I'll put up the shopstyle ads for one outfit post until the next one is up. I think too many shopstyle ads at once lags my blog a lot!

the wrapped and pinned cardigan is a great idea - I'm sure you will find a way to perfect it and emulate SJP the way you'd imagined.

I've recently tried wrapping my cardigans as well, without much success. I like the brooch idea though. I'll have to keep practicing.

I have a copy of that Gap ad somewhere. I loved it too and ripped it out of a magazine. Maybe a slightly bigger sweater would work better? Haven't tried it myself yet.

you look absolutely stunning!
the colours work so well together x

maybe it would work better with a larger size .?

Krista said...

That ad made me buy a Gap cardigan. I wore that thing to death. I think SJP's secret was a too-big cardigan to get a nice wrap.

BTW, green looks very good on you.

Bre said...

I remember those SJP for GAP ads! I love the sweater closed with a brooch. Any excuse to add anything sparkly I'm all for! How was Inception? I've never seen it

I don't think this a hot mess at all - I love it on you. brooch, colors, black jeans...all of it!

JESSU said...

Ooh. I like this whole pinning cardigan deal. I think it works well with boxy cardigans. Probably would look even better if it were pinned right under the bust area...

Of course I'd have to lose my thanksgiving weight first (like 5 pounds) and then maybe another ten to look remotely as good as you ;D

I know I'm ridiculously late on this post, but honestly, I'm not. I read it, didn't comment on it, remembered it, tried it, then had to hunt this down in your archives to comment on it. See? I'm not such a horrible reader after all. (:
May I just say, I. Adore. This. Look. I bought a new cardigan just to try it with! I think I found my new favorite trend!
