Let's get to know each other...

I picked up the guitar for the first time in years last night because I wanted to play this song. I sound like crap. You know how I know? Chase is wearing headphones and listening to music...and he put it up so loud I can hear it. Way to go, husband, you booger. But there was one time I was almost decent at the guitar. Back in my BYU-Idaho days, my then-roommate and I played this song [in the video below] in front of an audience for the first time. That was when Chase and I were dating and he fell in love with me after he heard me play. Just kidding. It was my beauty and charm, duh.Besides pretending to play the guitar, I also play the piano. I took lessons for 15 years, but now I play like a five year-old. What musical instruments do you play? Or what instruments do you wish you played? I think I want to make this a weekly Saturday thing. I have so many wonderful readers, but, unfortunately, don't have the time to visit all your coolio blogs and get to know you individually. I think this segment would be a great way to get to know each other one fact at a time.
i've always wanted to be this super duper rock star and either play the drums or sing my lungs out on stage. it turns out that my ands are made of jelly and my throat hurts like hell after a night of karaoke. thank God for showers singing :D
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! and haha you weren't bad in the video! Very cool. I sadly don't really play any instruments- I'm almost completely tone deaf... In elementary school though, I played recorder haha. and steel pan (a drum native to the Carribean). I wish I could play the guitar and piano, as well as drums. I really admire anyone who's able to play any instrument well.
ReplyDeleteAww That's Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI Played The Guitar For About 6-7 Years, But I Stopped Playing And I Forgot Most of It. I Can Play The Clarinet Pretty Well Though :P
And I Am Dying To Learn How To Play The Piano, It Would Be Like a Dream Come Truee :D
PSH! Who ever said asians can't sing was dead WRONG. You have a beautiful voice aaannnddd I'm jealous. Where do you live? I wanna be friends.
ReplyDeleteSydney
I've played the piano since I was a wee little thing, I've kept it up which makes me happy. I would love to play the guitar, it's on my Christmas list actually, and I'm learning a bit of the drums. Oh yes, the recorder in 4th grade doesn't count, and in 6th grade I had a fantasy of being a harpist.
ReplyDeleteP.S. thanks for the birthday wishes!
i play the alto saxophone. and i sing. i absolutly LOVE music, as does the rest of my big family.
ReplyDeletei always have wished i played guitar, but it just seems so much work to learn. maybe someday.
blessings.
I used to play the clarinet. I LOVE the sound of a clarinet in a jazz song. It makes me swoon. But I was pretty terrible. So now I just play the radio
ReplyDeleteno way! you went to BYUI?? me too!!!! i wish i could play the violin or the harp. i think that would be magical.
ReplyDeleteyou have a lovely voice too!
ReplyDeletei took piano for 5 years, violin for 7, and now i don't play either. though, i think i could pick up the violin again.
i'm getting my 6 yr old a guitar for christmas because i wish i could play! living vicariously through my child? yes!

I took guitar lessons for a few years, but I never bothered to practice enough to get very good. Now my guitar serves mostly as decoration that gets played when my boyfriend comes over. I like my teacher, though. He taught me whatever songs I wanted and told me I had cute feet. It sounds kinda creepy, actually, when I say it, but really it wasn't.
ReplyDeleteAt various times I've played the piano, drums, and any percussion instrument found in a high school band or drum corps pit. My favorite is the kettle drums (aka tympani).
ReplyDeleteI sure wish I know how to play any instruments at all. I tried to learn how to play guitar like years ago, but never remembered any of it. I suck! LOL! I only know how to sing a little bit. You guys have a beautiful voice and talent. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAdin B
i sing. i think i have a learning disability when it comes to instruments! ha.
ReplyDeletebut seriously.
Yesterday my husband and i found a banjo in the house we're living in up here in Rexburg, then, of course, we decided we should start a bluegrass band. it's, after all, the only logical thing to do after finding a banjo. he went to the store today to get a string--apparently i have to learn how to play the guitar or the fiddle, as he called banjo dibs.
this will be interesting.
i played the trumpet in seventh grade. i was awful. the worst in my class of thirty trumpeters by far. now i just stick to playing the sewing machine :)
ReplyDeleteAwww Elaine - you sound lovely and play wonderfully! I never got the chance to really learn any instruments [my dad thought it'd be "too noisy"].
ReplyDeleteI always wish I got to learn how to play piano or violin. though i technically took a free violin class at 6am for a couple of months in elementary school. but even then i couldn't wake up that early and often fell back asleep in class.
xx Vivian @ http://diamondsandtulle.blogspot.com
I started on the recorder (LOL), then moved to the trumpet, then french horn. In marching band I also picked up the mellophone since it's very similar to the french horn as far as notes and sound. I used to really really want to learn the harp and the electric violin. People scoff at both of those. I should learn one just to be ornery.
ReplyDeleteI used to have a lot of friends who would complain about their parents making them take piano lessons ... I was always so glad I wasn't forced to. However, part of me now wishes that they had. I love the piano!
ReplyDeletewww.sidewalkready.com
You have such a pretty voice!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I know you! I've been following the blog for awhile now, but until you posted this video, I didn't realize I knew you! We went to college together! We were in Percussion Ensemble together @ BYU-I and your roomie (Jaimee) in this video was my roomie summer 2006. WOW! Small world!
ReplyDeleteI played the flute all through middle and high school. Now I have a fantasy life of growing old with my J sitting in rocking chairs on our porch in the mountains playing bluegrass music into the wee hours. I'd rock a banjo and he'd back my up on harmonica. Right now we have both instruments in the house, but they are simply decorative.
ReplyDeleteI faked playing the flute for a year (hated it) and took piano lessons for five years (that was okay).
ReplyDeleteI wish I could rock out on the drums or play the guitar...or sing. I have few musical talents besides drumming on pews, clapping on beat, and dancing. Is dancing even a musical talent?
i cannot wait to have the time and money in my hands to learn how to play guitar! you are too cute!
ReplyDeleteP.S you play really nice, and i love your voice!
ReplyDeleteI have played the piano for almost ten years now! I love it and think I might actually be talented ;)

Aw, thanks for sharing. You have a lovely voice and you're quite good at the guitar. I like to sing and play (badly) the guitar as well. Like most Koreans, I am a big fan of karaoke.
ReplyDeleteYou sounded great--singing and playing. I wish I could do that. If I had to pick one instrument, I guess I would choose the piano. It would be so cool to be able to sit down and pound out a tune.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little we had an old table-top organ (with numbers) that I tried to play. It came with a book of music that tied the notes to a number. I played with it this time of year more than any other. My favorite songs in the book were Silent Night and O Little Town of Bethlehem.
I play the trumpet among other things - after years of searching for an instrument that just *fit*, I finally fell in love with the trumpet. My mum says it's because it's as loud as me ;) aha!
ReplyDeleteMuch love as always,
Hannie

Ow, Elaine! How beatutiful this video! I love it! I have a very long story with instruments. In fact, my whole family plays something. I have a sister who plays the violin since she was 7 and now her 3-year-old daughter is taking classes too. I sing at church and a couple of years ago I started studying keybord, drums and guitar. I gave up of all of them =/ But I still sing on Sundays :) I have got a guitar from Alex, but I'm too lazy to learn and he was always too busy to teach me. Someday I wish I play something! Have a great Sunday!
ReplyDeleteMusic is something I've always been "good" at. It's one of the most powerful thing in the world. For the longest time I wanted to be a musician :)
ReplyDeleteI first learned how to play the clarinet, but then moved on to other wind instruments like saxophone and oboe. Then I tried to learned the cornet and that failed miserably.
Now I'm strictly a cliche piano and guitar player. And even more cliche, a vocalist.
But I lovelovelove your video. Very talented :D
I have no musical ability whatsoever. I'd love to play the cello though. Or perhaps drums, if I actually had any upper body strength.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a lovely voice! I can play about three children's songs on the piano. I kind of wish I could play the violin. I love the sound.
ReplyDeleteI played the piano long ago, but I play rotten guitar now. I sing though! Record music, sing for church and weddings, and one of my dreams is to be a lead vocalist for a swing band.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's wonderful that you can play the guitar and piano!
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to learn to play guitar, but didn't have the patience to pick it up properly. I've played piano since I was 5 but I haven't played since college, so I think my skills are near zero!
I think musical abilities are such a great thing to have! =)
Hehhe I saw coolio too =)
ReplyDeleteI play piano verrrryyy bad.. I took lessons, but very shortly.
I want to play the piano, guitar, and maybe drums..
Bellesme
I play the uke. That's how I get all them boys
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I had piano lessons for 10 years with private lessons, school lessons, and a weird school/private combo. But now I kicked the classical and I stick to Broadway tunes. Plus I was a band nerd in middle school (clarinet, 1st chair). And I play my vocal chords. I wish I could play guitar, but I want to learn to play the cello so badly! Maybe once I finish school I will be able to pick it up. Can't wait for next week's question!
ReplyDelete-Sarah
Good job for picking up a guitar. I havent touched mine in ages:( I wish I knew how to play instruments, but I'm not good with my hands. Luckily, I can sing:)
ReplyDeleteElaine--you have a beautiful voice! I'll bet the guitar skillz would return with a little practice. I took ten years of piano lessons and now, all I'm good for would be basic church hymns. It's a shame, but as a young adult I didn't have a piano around to practice.
ReplyDeleteI secretly wish I could be a super star singer, but the only one who seems to appreciate my singing voice is my 2o month old :-)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty darling!
ReplyDeleteI played the piano for 2 years but then quit cxause my teacher never really taught me how to read the music. I wish I played guitar! My brother plays AMAZINGLY! Such a booger butt! LOL!
These past few months I have been trying to play the piano and learn something LOL! I know the very beginning and the chorus of "When I Look at You" (Not a fan of Miley... just the song and movie!) I now wanna learn "Do I" by luke Bryant! Hehe!!
I can play one song on the piano. I was in choir for 5 years, tried out for every solo, and never got one. Sad.
ReplyDeleteI played the flute for maybe 5 years... I learned to play a couple songs on the guitar then got bored with it. Same thing with a piano, though I can generally sit down at a piano and just magically figure out how to play songs. I always wanted to play the trumpet and the violin. I also did a lot of choir stuff. I specifically avoided solos - though everyone that actually heard me sing said I should do them. *shrug* As a yogi, I also want to learn the harmonium.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI tried the violin and piano as a kid, even though I was in love with guitars and harmonicas. I've played the trumpet for about 9 years, and in the past few years I've been working on learning the guitar. I'm reasonably ok now with strumming, but I suck at figuring out how to pick the strings for certain songs...soo...all my songs sound EXACTLY the same. lol. Other than that, I sing in choirs and by myself.
I'm currently dating someone who also plays the trumpet (as in...not just a hobby), and we tried a duet the other day in his apartment. It was so....fun. In a completely dorky way. :D hehe
I play the piano but I secretly wish I could play violin.
ReplyDeletewow you have a beautiful voice! i've been a long-time lurker of your blog. and i just literally listened to this video 3 times in a row and felt that i had to comment to tell you that. the harmony parts are so lovely!
ReplyDeletei dabbled in piano, french horn, and flute. i've always wanted to learn the violin.
I totally played saxophone back in the day..I basically wanted to BE Lisa Simpson. And i rocked it too! Now Im not even sure I could assemble it?!
ReplyDeleteI played the flute for eight or nine years. I was in marching band, concert band, and went to a few solo & ensemble competitions. I quit playing it because high school made me really unhappy but I've been thinking of taking it up again.
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to learn to play the violin. I think violinists are sexy. :) Of course you have to make a sexy mouth pucker to play the flute, so...
musicishername.blogspot.com
Elaine this was SO beautiful!! You have a lovely voice and your guitar skills rock! I don't play any instruments, unless you count my voice =P I was in choir for 9 years. I really want to learn guitar though. I bought hubby one for Christmas, something we can both enjoy ;P
ReplyDeleteWow, you have a beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing that. :-) I hope you can start playing regularly again.
ReplyDeleteYou sound VERY pretty. Beautiful song, too. I wish I played the piano. I don't play a musical instrument at all. But I always wanted to play the piano. I even dream I can play it sometimes!
ReplyDeleteheart: kimberellie
I play piano, too, but only well enough to play the hymns. Though, I once was called as RS pianist and it was the most stressful calling ever. I can't accompany other people. I get way too nervous! But I do love to sing and enjoy accompanying myself. In the next few months, I hope to do my Hawaiian heritage proud and learn the ukulele. I'm super excited!
ReplyDeleteThat was so beautifully played. You're definitely really talented.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to learn to play the guitar properly. I started learning, but never had the time to do so properly and I regret it! Maybe I'll take it up again over the Christmas holidays.
what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI took guitar lessons for three years in high-school, and can still fumble around with it but don't play very often anymore. I also played trumpet throughout band in school.
I used to play the piano as well, for 8 years but, it felt like forever because I started when I was 4... I wouldn't say my skills have deteriorated to 5 year old but, they are pretty lame
ReplyDeleteplayed the violin for over 4 years, after that, took piano for 3. i love being able to sit down and just play a simple tune!
ReplyDeleteyou play guitar and sing wonderfully! i also played piano for 10 years growing up but haven't touched it in way too long now. thanks for sharing this video!
ReplyDeletecuteandlittle.com
Oh wow!! This is so good, I love your voice too :D :D
ReplyDeleteI only ever played my throat ;) I stink with instruments, haha
http://aclosetfashionista.blogspot.com/
I've always wanted to play with piano AND guitar. I taught myself enough piano to play a few of the simple primary songs, but that's where it ended. And I'd love to learn the guitar, but I worry I'm too old. Ha! Great video, though. :)
ReplyDeleteso its a long story--my mother started taking piano at Cal Poly as part of her major, childhood education. my father bought her a piano so we had a piano in our home from the time I was about 10. She started giving me lessons and promised that if I kept practicing, i could have "real" lessons. well, you guessed it, i didn't keep up my practicing. I remember fondly, falling asleep to her practicing every night (at the time I didn't love it so much. I was a teenager! what can I say) fast-forward to 1989. My husband bought a keyboard and I started playing hymns on it, or I should say, trying to play hymns. I did memorize "Book of Mormon Stories" and can still play it today. When my mother got very sick and wasn't playing anymore, I asked her if I could have her piano. After she died in 2001, my dad tried to give it away and that's when we moved her piano (not the original one from the 60's) to my house where it mostly collects dust. I do try to play at least once a week. As my husband said recently, "I aspire to play the piano".
ReplyDeleteNeat-o! Great sound :)
ReplyDeleteI played the violin from 4th grade till senior year of highschool, I guess I was inspired by Yellowcard to keep playing but stopped after I broke my collarbone.
I've always wanted to learn to play the guitar but don't feel like having the required super short nails so I just write songs with of my bffs who plays the guitar and ukulele--she's also learning the mandolin!
Good music really warms my heart :)
I'm hoping my bf will keep practicing guitar so he can serenade me one day soon...
xx
That's great that you're picking the guitar back up. Like you, I took piano lessons for-ev-ah! And now I sound like a child trying to play again. Boo! I also play violin. I played clarinet at school, but hated how the reed felt against my teeth (it's my nails on a chalkboard heebie-jeebie thing) so I gave it up my junior year in hs after our last band trip (to sunny Cali.. the only reason I stayed in band so long). :)
ReplyDeleteBetter Than a Milk Mustache
I can play the piano, viola and drums! I wish I played the guitar, ukelele and cello. I've got a ukelele I just need to get it stringed so I can learn how to play! Music really is a gift and makes me very happy :)
ReplyDeleteI love that song you played in the video. You guys' version is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI play guitar and piano, too, but not well at all. I imagine our skill levels are probably pretty similar because our stories sound so similar! I do have a keyboard though, it's just not the same as a piano! I also played clarinet from 4th grade to 12th grade... I never loved it, but I appreciate that kind of music more now, I think.
I had just one public appearance playing the guitar. It would have been two but I chickened out once. The time I didn't chicken out (but I almost did, I made them late being sick in the bathroom... I'm too stinkin shy!) I played electric guitar in a one-song band with some other girls. It's on video but I'm too embarrassed to share.
I've always wanted to learn the cello and the didgeridoo, as well.
I'm kind of obsessed with music, can you tell? Sorry this comment is so long.
I love that you play the guitar! So do I! I play the guitar and the violin pretty well, and I'm trying to learn the piano. I also sing. A lot. I mean, a lot a lot. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI love that you try to get to know your readers! It's so sweet.
Lindsey Soup
I play piano a little bit... I have a keyboard. I wish I played drums.
ReplyDeleteI just love you, Elaine! I totally LOVED playing guitar with you back then...you sent me on my way to writing and playing even more. Love and miss you, lady!
ReplyDeletei've had the sudden urge to be able to play cello. in my opinion, its the most beautiful string instrument. buuut being 15 i dont know how well it'll work out since it seems learning an instrument starts when you're 3. haha (:
ReplyDeleteI've been playing guitar since I was about 10, so it's been 11 years, I sound like I've been playing for about 1 year though. Hah. I'm horrible at reading notes, which is why piano never succeeded.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, I had a dream I was a guitar player in a band last night, and I was teaching my band how to play "blackbird" (by the beatles) so weird. I guess it's time I brush up my skills!
Your voice is wonderful!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
colormenana.blogspot.com
Who's super late to the party?! This girl, right here -_-
ReplyDeleteI played clarinet for eight years and can maybe string a few keys together on a keyboard, but I really wish I had a smashing voice. That would rock my life and I could serenade all my favorite people without embarrassing myself lol
I played the piano when I was younger and played the flute and piccolo throughout high school. I played tenor sax in the jazz band in high school, but I wasn't very good. I wish I had kept up piano. Most of all, I wish I could sing!!! I have a DREADFUL singing voice. oh well.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! You should get back into playing guitar. I don't play any instruments, only a little piano by ear. Does Rockband count?
ReplyDeleteYou're adorable. I'd love to play the drums, guitar and/or piano, but I don't play anything.
ReplyDeleteI sing while I wash dishes though, and the acoustics in my kitchen make me sound like a rockstar :)
Hahah what a cute feature - and you have significantly more talent than I do. I played flute in middle school and well. it was just sad. very sad.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good song!
ReplyDeleteI used to play the flute, but haven't in years. I want to learn something I can keep in my pocket, like the harmonica or jaw harp.
My favorite song, in the world!!
ReplyDeleteI actually just posted it in my blog tonight, http://elysethedailylife.blogspot.com/
You are amazing! I used to play clarinet, piano, and tried guitar. It's my goal to learn.
Love, Elyse
Are you a christian? I seriously had this feeling reading your blog you might be but this song I think confirms it. That's awesome. Stay strong girl and beautiful song :)
