Behind the Posts

Wednesday, November 10, 2010
It seems a few of you don't realize how much work goes into one outfit post. It usually takes me an hour to an hour and a half to do one. Here is a print-screen-by-print-screen of what I do for an outfit post.

1. I get the pictures from that day from the memory card and put it in my outfits folder. At the moment, I have 9,271 pictures from the past year and a half of blogging. I usually need at least a hundred pictures (once it was up to 500) but now that I have to take my pictures in the morning, it's been around 50 pictures in 5 minutes. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of good pictures in such a short amount of time because I'm not a morning person. I then look through all of them and choose three to five that I like.

2. Then I Photoshop everything. I brighten the pictures up, make them more colorful, and resize them because this looks bland, right?
Ahhhh.. The finished product. Much better.
3. I upload them all to my Flickr account. I also add my pictures to various Flickr groups and add my outfit details to all of them.
4. I copy each image URL onto Blogger and add my alt tags.
5. I write the post. This is the hardest part...usually because I feel like I should be writing something interesting instead of "I wore this today. The end." ...because 99% of the time, that's all I want to write. I'm no Kendi. She's suave with her words and wit.
6. Outfit details done. Labels done.
7. Shopstyle items are individually selected. I select items that I would want for myself. They're not just random things I pull off the interweb. Then I add the HTML code in at the bottom of each post.
8. DONE.
That was a dumbed down version of how I spend an hour and a half of my time every night when I could be making dinner (Chase made it the past two nights), washing the dishes (Chase also did that the past two nights), folding the laundry (not done yet), sweeping (did it a few days ago), making the bed (..next week), picking out what I should wear the next day, and most importantly spending time with my husband. So no more complaining, okay??

  1. God, I know what you mean! It takes me forever to come up with posts. The hardest part for me is taking the photos of my outfits (I really need to invest in a quality tripod). It hurts when people leave such nasty comments. I have an "anonymous" commenter (but I really know who the stinker is) that keeps harassing me and my blog. If people don't like what you have to say or post, why BOTHER commenting? People really need to find better things to do than to complain.

Anyways, enough of my rant. I happen to love your blog and all of your posts :) Keep going, cuz you're great!

  4. i am amazed at people who have time to complain on your great blog posts. doesn't it seem like a waste of time to say something negative when something positive could be said? i barely have time to go to the bathroom, let alone bring other people down. i think you do a great job!

  5. Oh no, sorry it sounds like you're getting grief from some complainers. I know how hard it can be to do this everyday, but all of your posts are thoughtful and beautiful and your efforts definitely come through. You're a joy to read everyday -- keep up the great work!

  6. Great post. I have the same problem each time I want to write something on my blog. And editing the photos is a hard work too.

  7. Im SOOOOO glad someone finally pointed out how long it takes us! Im glad you did! People think its just take photo and post, but its really very rigorous!

Fantastic post, and as always loving the blog!

  8. it takes me forever to blog, too. I take my pictures after work (although today I took them on my lunch hour which was nice - no competing with joggers and the rapidly setting sun), and that usually takes about a half hour. Then I do the upload/edit process, and blogging - I would say I've got it down to each post, from pictures to publishing, take about two hours. That's a lot for a hobby! It's so worth it though!

  9. I can't BELIEVE people would comment on your blog.. or any blog for that matter, complaining! Sheesh. What a bunch of crazies.

Your blog is awesome. But you have a life too. If they want 800 posts a day, they should get off their fat butts and write a blog themselves :)

  10. Really? People are complaining? poop on them.

I also love how Kendi writes. I think your writing style is also great. I'm usually rushing to post and get back to work so my posts end up being head spew. Whatever's floatin' around in there. My poor readers, lol.

omg 500 pics?! omg 100 pics? wow!!! I think the max I've ever taken in a session is maybe 50, but usually it's like 10. Lately, it's been about 5. I just don't have the time. But your pics look way better than mine, so I guess it shows, ;)

  11. You really have people complaining? About what? No one is entitled to anything here: it's a blog, not a personal service. I can't beleive anyone would think they had the right. We all benefit from your time, though. Keep it up, lovely.

  12. Eff the complainers. Anyone who takes decent outfit pics knows how much effort goes into those posts. Also, I have been known to stare at my computer for what seems like hours trying to come up with anything to say beyond "this is what I wore."

Also, completely off topic, but I just read this "I will not accept comments like Love your blog! Follow mine!! xoxoxo or with comment signatures that are 20 lines long because you're ridiculous. Kloveyoubye." and laughed out loud. So true.

  13. Elaine, You soooo didn't need to do this post. The people who are bothering you can kick rocks. Even this won't make them happy. Everyone else will still be around. Those people who need you to post more can a) find OTHER bloggers (geniuses)... not that hard (because shockingly you're not responsible for being their sole source of entertainment), b) follow you on reader, c) see: aforementioned kicking exercise.

  14. Wow you are so organized with your posts and pictures. Your pictures always turn out so wonderfully!

  15. Hallelujah! Yes, it takes some real time to put posts together. Sometimes I feel like it becomes a second job, but one that I really love. I can't believe the amt of pics you have! Wow! Your photos always look great and your posts are a good a good read. Thank you for the work you do!!

  16. Haha, I love behind-the-scenes look! I never actually tabulated how long it takes me from start to finish, but I figure it takes me anywhere from an hour to a couple to make a blog post. And yes, Photoshop is my best friend, we hang out all the time.

And did you see my latest post? Because that's a primo example of how "buhbuh where did my words go?" I can get when trying to think of words besides the whole "Here's what I wore today, bye." xD

  17. Sorry about all the dumb complainers. When I used to blog about health/wellness/weight,etc, all I had to do was get some inspiration and write. Now, it's definitely more of a time consuming process, and I still love it, it's just time consuming.

I always appreciate the quality of your posts. Haters gonna hate. Keep up the great work. :)

  18. This is amazingly helpful and comforting, especially for those of us just in the beginning stages. I thought I was a total moron for taking so many photos of myself and finding just a handful of non-cringeworthy ones.

Also, your blogging tips post is super helpful as well. So glad I found you off Kendi's blog. :)

Ah, I love the interweb! =)

  20. wow I can't believe people would complain about how often you blog! They are stupid. You are so dedicated to making good posts- goodness 100 pictures per day? You are MUCH more industrious than I am :-) I have neglected my blog for a good 2 months since all I can handle right now is getting food on the table and keeping the house sanitary. Kudos to you for having a full-time job, a husband AND and an awesome blog! Thanks for all the lovely posts I get to enjoy :-)

  21. Thanks for sharing this. I know that there is much more difficult at the begining, but It is good to hear and see that I am not only one who takes hundreds of pictures to pick up one or two good ( or good enough) especially when you have lack of sunlight as I have lately. So as always your blog is a big support. :)

  24. omg i am so with you on this post, it takes me soooo long sometimes to get a post done! the pictures always take forever to get a good one, then i have to edit them, upload them (which always messes up!) then think of something clever to write...it's exhausting! whoever says blogging is easy is obviously not doing it right :P

  28. It really does take forever to get one little blog post done, doesn't it!! Sometimes I wonder why I started doing this in the first place because it is like a second job but then I remember that I love fashion and it helps me be more creative in my clothing choices. I think you do a great job everyday!

  34. WHY? First of all, WHY the negative comments? Its an entertaining BLOG, for goodness sakes. Second,
WHY take that much time? To me, all your pictures are fab. Thirdly, WHY blog at all? Do you really make that much money from blogging? If you are happy with it (& it appears many of us are as well), just post it then go spend some quality time with your husband. He deserves it.

  35. Teri,

Thanks for your comment. But I don't think you understood the whole "one hour to an hour and a half" part of posting.

  36. Elaine, you're a marvel. I struggle to blog every other day so I'm SO impressed with people who manage it every day, especially when they do it to such a high standard as you do.

The picture thing is scaring me a little though! I take maybe 20 max - just don't have the patience for any more!

ps - I love your writing style and sense of humour so please don't compare yourself negatively to other bloggers on that front.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm impressed with how much time you spend on your posts. I think most people realize that it is normal for other things to take precedence over blogging, especially for people who do not blog as their primary job.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't understand people that complain about someone's blog. If you don't like it, quit reading! Reee-dic. I say you go on a posting strike for a week, just to show you can. :) Finley

  40. 500 PICS?? Wow thats crazy, mine don't take that long because I take less pictures, and because I don't do outfit posts, I'm behind the camera so its easier to take a better picture =P
LOL just wondering, how long did it take to do this post? I mean posting a post about your posts? Mouthful....
Well thanks so much for doing this everyday just for us! <3
I appreciate it, esp since you have a job and a husband to feed =P

  46. I'm not sure what the complaints are about, but in a friendly way, I would say that it has been considerably more difficult to see the individual pieces of your outfit and details since you moved. I think it is because all of the light is coming from behind. I'm not sure what your other options are, but I loved the outdoor pics you used to do. If you can't do that It may help to just take the picture from the other way and have the light shining in on the front of your outfit instead of coming from the back. I know some people have commented that they really like your backlit photos, but I find them frustrating because I can't really see what you're wearing.

I moved about a year ago to a house with very poor lighting and have blogged a whole lot less frequently since then partially because it is so hard to take a good picture.

Thanks for the time and effort you put into this - I really love seeing your outfits, I just feel like I haven't really been able to see them lately. Thanks!

  48. I feel like a really lazy blogger now.
I just take a few photos, then post them on my blog with a little comment.

But I do love your blog! Your hilarious, even if you don't realize it.

  49. Jessi,

Thanks for your comment. As you know I have a full time job right now and it gets pitch black by the time I get home. The early morning light isn't that great in my apartment and I have to photoshop the crap out of the bookcase pics to make it look like that. Right now I don't have a lot of options as I am very busy. You'll just have to accept the photoshopped bookcase and back lit hallway pics.

  50. This makes me feel so much better about the 10 or so that I take.

    ReplyDelete
  51. people are complaining? that you don't post enough or something? That's lame.

That is a pretty long time to spend on them though. lol
Normally if I'm in a hurry I use picasa. But your pictures always look nicer than mine...so yeah.
If you are using photoshop, which it looks like it, you could make yourself some actions. That way the editing part wouldn't take so long.
Also, why do you upload to flicker? Just wondering. I just upload straight to my blog.

I think it is kinda cool that you pick out specific things you'd like.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You really go to a lot of trouble--wow! I don't do any cropping or photoshopping of my pics. I'm not that talented. Love your outfits! Thanks for sharing.

  53. What's wrong with the bookself? I like your bookshelf pictures! It makes you look very collegiate! :) Whatever you do in photoshop, they look great. P.S. Do you ever turn up the ISO on your camera? Sometimes that helps when you have little light. I like your back lit photos too, though. Rock on, sister.

  59. all i have to say is WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD COMPLAIN OR BE NEGATIVE ABOUT YOUR BLOG!?!?!?! ok, got that out of my system. basically i think you are amazing and i love checking your blog. not only for your fabulous photos but also for your funny writing (yes, you are funny, even if you dont realize it!!). plus in my mind we're basically friends...is that weird? hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh Elaine, I don't have a fashion blog that I update as often as you do (thank you for doing that b/c you're sharing your ideas and inspire many of us) but I know how hard it is to maintain a blog (or try to) and have a real life going (since I got this new job that pretty much sucked the soul out of me, I've just been pooped these days). Naturally, blogging usually falls to the last of my priority.

So yah, thanks for showing us the process behind the scene and for keeping up with your blog so faithfully! :D

    ReplyDelete
  61. The writing is the hardest part... sometimes I just wanna say 'I have nothing funny left to say, hold me' haha, ok, maybe not hold me but you get the point.
I always think your posts are pretty and clever. Worth the effort! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  62. My daily posts take me between an hour and an hour and a half like yours. I swear when I think about what I do it should be much quicker. I tend to write about my day which adds time. I take between 2 and 30 pictures a day. Some days 60 if I'm trying something new or have a new toy (aka new remote to test). I'm going to share this on google reader. So much time goes into blogging and then people get so critical because they think it just takes 2 minutes.

I don't edit my photos really. I just crop them. But the last few days I've discovered more editing techniques and have been obsessed and think I spent 8 hours today blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I loved seeing your workflow! I agree that the writing is the hardest part, sometimes I have nothing to say, while other times, I have too many and I need to revise the draft over and over again to cut it down. XDD

  64. OMG! i totally do the same! it could take me half day (4 hours) to post 1 article each on my 2 blogs (food and outfits/life) arrghhhh
