Cute can be an ugly word.

Jess and I went out last night to an art and fashion event in downtown L.A. We weren't sure of a lot of the specifics but if it was anything related to fashion, we were going to be there since we're obviously stylin'. It was more luxe than we thought. I was definitely dressed "cuter" than the other girls there, which is saying something because you know I hate that word applied to me.

We weren't sure of the dress code and Jess suggested business casual. I'm so glad I listened to her because they were pretty strict on who to let in, but not strict enough on the hemlines. I couldn't take pictures of the fashion show because my camera was dying. Watch the Stylepint blog for updates and to see what she wore! I loved her shoes.

I'm wearing a handmade flower necklace ($3), secondhand Simply Vera dress ($12), and JCPenney heels (free with gift card).

  1. Gorgeous look Elaine! Very elegant, I wouldn't even call it "cute" because you look so sophisticated.

  2. Haha, I remember the "cute" conversation. I kind of feel the same way to the "adorable" but I'm sure I've been guilty of using both before!

  3. Elaine.. I think you look super chic in this look. That is a great frock and would love to see it belted on you in a future post. :) I think with it cinched in, it would created a more dressy silhouette. :D

    Happy Sunday.

  4. I can see the "cute" but I think it's pretty sophisticated (the heels!).

  5. I am trying to post but i dont know whats going on.
Just wanted to say that I like the look.
Looks comfortable, put together and updated.

  6. Again, I'm a little obsessed with your purple pumps. And that print! Wow.

Someone once told me 'cute' was just another way to say 'fat' and I've never forgotten it! Humph.

  7. I ADORE the shoes and the necklace! I can't believe it's handmade; it's most definitely awesome. I hope you at least had fun at the event, even if you didn't feel clothing appropriate. I always wish places and events posted dress codes (preferably with cute example pictures)! I think everyone would feel a bit less awkward.

  8. That dress has such a great print!! And I hate when I don't know the dress code, makes it so much harder to pick an outfit, haha

  11. I always get that "cute" comment, but I've grown used to it. Plus, cute is better than looking...scandalous. =P

Btw, you're always so on top of posting, you're putting me to shame!

  12. thank you so much for your opinions about my blog! very helpful ^_^ i'm turning the music off autoplay right now *pouts* lol

    i love those shoes.

i read your "cute" post...i don't think you look cute, i think you look sophisticated or chic...hope you don't mind, i think those traits are good things. i don't know what i would call myself but i don't really know anything about fashion LOL

  13. Hi Elaine~
I'm so happy to have come across your blog!
I'm a Korean American LDS who used to live in Utah as well! I just started a mommy-fashion blog not too long ago and your last post was very helpful...

    Thanks Elaine ^ ^

  14. I really like your outfit... it goes so well together.

Did you change your blog layout recently? The right couple centimeters of all your writing is getting cut off on my screen, and it never used to. Even when I expand the window all the way... Not sure?

  19. You are so lucky that you get to be all sophisticated now and go out on the town like real grown-ups. Gaw, I LIVE for that day! You look so beautiful as always. Enjoy your sophisticated LA life lady! :)

  20. Your outfit looks great. I probably wouldn't have called it 'cute' (if I sat and thought about what the word meant to me rather than using it as an ambiguous but positive adjective). So I'm curious what it means that you dressed 'cuter' than other girls there. I actually had missed your previous note on how much 'cute' bothers you, so I apologize if I've ever used it w.r.t. your lovely self.

hey and look, I'm going to use this again :)

  22. I have this exact dress & STILL haven't figured out how to wear it. The fit is almost too strange for me. But I like how you've done it!

  23. the dress is wonderful and lends itself to all sorts of combinations!

  24. I love your shoes. I seriously cannot get over them. I can't ever find some in that shade of purple. Ugh. Just put them in a box and send them to me. OK? ok.

PS I don't know how you put your belt in that knot on your header pic, but I LIKE IT!

  25. Lovely dress, and I love that yellow necklace! Glad you had a good time at the event!

  28. I was never into non-fitting dresses, or A-frame dresses but you actually pull it off. I'm only 5 foot so I can't really pull off wearing "big" looking dresses... I really like your necklace! Fifi gave me something really similar that was black. I haven't been able to wear it yet though <- flower necklaces are hard to incorporate into outfits.

Anyhoo, as soon as I saw this post I clicked the "follow" button haha keep it up! Actually, I just altered a plain denim dress. Us Kiwis love DIY ;)

  36. Elaine:
I, too, have had to come to terms with "cute." I'm always striving for Gil Elvgren pin-up sexy or Audrey Hepburn chic but I'm really just plain ol' cute. I love your outfits! Yours is one of my favorite blogs, you cutie. :)

I missed the berry shoes! I love those. And I think you look fantastic here. That's miles outside the "cute" zone. :)

  58. Can I just say that you are very inspiring? Thank you for the inspiration to dress modestly, haha. 67. Cute has never really been a demeaning adjective to me - I guess because that is my adjective, the one that most readily springs to mind when I see things I like (and think about my own style).

But this look is definitely in a different category than cute - more like playfully sophisticated. I love the pops of color with that simple pattern! And those shoes...I want to steal them because they are amazing.
