What I wore...shopping

Wednesday, September 08, 2010
This is our dining area. It's only big enough to fit two people, which is fine because we don't have any friends in L.A. yet. Will you be my friend?

I wore this a couple of weeks ago when we went shopping. When shopping, you should wear clothes that can come off easily and comfortably. I chose leggings and a big t-shirt. The sequin flats make it a little more put together instead of looking like I just rolled out of bed. I remembered to put on a jacket before I left because it gets pretty chilly here at night.

  16. As bad as this comment sounds for the very put-together outfits, this particular one is one of my favourites so far, even though it's quite basic.

  24. I often wear stupidly complex outfits when shopping so it takes me five minutes just to get back into my clothes again. But I always contest that it's somehow worthwhile as a possible over shopping deterrent. or something.

ps. your blog post signature link currently has a typo in it.

  55. Haha I'll be your friend! I'm a little East of LA... :)

This is a great combo for shopping though. For years I have always tried to wear things that are easily layerable/removable for shopping, and then people laugh at me for putting that much thought into shopping. Glad to see that a.) I'm not crazy and b.) your shopping outfit is so cute! You definitely know how to make basics look fab.

  56. I really enjoy your blog ... so ... thanks for putting out a good blog!

Wanted to ask how you have such nice furniture (the couch, the dining table + chairs). As you say in your sidebar, you're "poor." My fiance and I (who also live in LA) are not exactly rolling in dough and I would love to know the secret (if there is one). Or are you just an extremely good shopper?

That is, if you don't mind sharing. Thanks! :-)

Also, what size Hanes do you buy? We're about the same size and I never know what to do when the clothes are all packaged in plastic and I can't hold it up to my body!

  57. Very cute! I love the flats and jacket.

My best friend Lauren lives in LA... you should befriend her :) Here is one of her blogs:

  58. @Pamela

First of all, thank you! Our furniture really isn't that nice but we don't have any other option so we make do ;).

We bought our couch off Craigslist. The dining table and chairs we bought when we first got married. The table is from IKEA and the chairs are from Walmart. They were originally dark brown and the seats were black. We painted all three black and reupholstered the seats with some fabric from JoAnn's.

My tip is to check out craigslist and thrift stores! It helps to see furniture in their potential and not how they look at that moment. You can always paint over and reupholster anything. Some items cost more than others but if you buy paint or whatever on sale and do it yourself, it really doesn't cost that much.

I buy size small Hanes but they're still huge like you see here. They shrink after a few washes to hit right at my hips but the first couple of times are still pretty long.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ahhh ... so it seems like the trick is to DIY a bit after purchasing a piece. I never thought of that, not being too handy myself. Makes sense and I will definitely keep that in mind. Was upholstering difficult? I wouldn't even know where to begin ...

Thanks for the tip on being Hanes shirts. I think I might like them a tad long (covering my tush) so that I can wear leggings with them.

  60. LOVE that jacket!

p.s. also loved your tweet today! great way to start any morning!

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Pamela

It wasn't bad. It was difficult for us because we were working with vertical lines and wanted to keep them as straight as possible. We unscrewed the seat off, covered it with the fabric, and then stapled it. Easy peazy!! ..especially since we did this all at my in-laws house. We don't have a staple gun!!

If you ever have questions about the area or would like suggestions on what to do/where to go, let me know. My fiance and I have lived here our whole lives.
