Date Night

Sunday, September 05, 2010
Chase and I went to the Getty Center last night for date night. It was spontaneous and, most importantly, FREE. I didn't realize how expensive dates were until I got married and realized I had to pay for my half now too. BOO. What are some of your favorite date nights on the cheap? Ours is cleaning. Just kidding. It's only when I make Chase clean that I like it. I know. I make an awesome wife.

I recently bought this top and it has ruched sleeves like this one and this one. I probably should stop buying it. I'm not a huge fan of polka-dots but I liked that the polka-dots looked slightly faded. It says "I'm interesting because I wear polka-dots but if you look closer, they're fading so I may have worn this a lot but I really didn't."

  1. Aren't dates just fun?! :) Bunny and I like to go out on walks, picnics when there is nice weather in the Bay Area, umm.. wow! we really don't go out on dates. How sad! All we do is study. Does that count? =P

  3. What a fabulous date night outfit!

When M. and I were grad students, we often would go to picnic in the park, especially when there was Shakespeare in the park. It only cost whatever we wanted to bring with us and we usually gave a $5 or $10 as a donation to the acting company when they passed the hat around at intermission.

  4. That just goes to show the saying is true... the best things in life are either really expensive or free. :) That top is so cute, but then, I'm actually a fan of polka dots myself...

  15. ahhhh...jealous! I love The Getty and now you live next to it. Isn't the garden amazing? So in case you're ever in Malibu, the The Getty Villa is pretty cool too. Miss you!

  18. Love your hair in these! We go on drives sometimes for a cheap after dinner entertainment, if we have a picturesque setting it feels like a night out.

  19. You are cuter than cute! I just love this outfit. The shoes and the shirt together: so perfect! And you are right about date night: much less expensive when you don't have to pay your half! ;-) As for cheap dates: tea, chocolate, a movie. That's our usual (whilst the baby sleepeth). Also:

walks (forest/city/going about residential neighbourhoods and pointing out which Victorian houses you like best)
    beach goings
    coffee dates
browsing used bookstores (pick up Starbucks before you head out)--even cheaper--to go mug tea/coffee and then library browsing!
    cribbage/other games
me trying on all my clothes in different combinations and asking my husband what he likes best! ha! but seriously, fun.
    crafts (scrapbooking, crocheting)
    baking together

You really wanted a list like this, right? right? ;-)

ps. would it be alright if I put a pick up of you on my blog for my "blog obsession of the moment"? Because you are perfectly obsessable.

  20. Beautiful! You've put so many details from different styles: denim, animal print, dots, vintage looking belt, boxy bag with chain - but everything looks just great together.

  23. Hi Elaine I miss reading your posts, good thing I did not miss a lot...

Date nights just the best things that I always look forward to...

I guess for me, the random movie marathon with cake rolls or thai thin biscuits and some big bottled fermented milk is the best...

love the outfit and your new banner too...

  25. You look so cute in your date night outfit! Sadly, our date nights are usually cooking together! But maybe we should pack up the food and head to a park for a picnic to shake things up.

And don't forget to go to a playground and play on the swings! Exercise and adorably romantic!

  26. CUTE!!!!! I love those types of sleeves too =]
I hope you and Chase get to go out more often =]

  27. I am in love with ruched sleeves as well, but I'm afraid of buying too many of those shirts! I already have two, but it's so tempting to buy more...

  28. aw, I love the top (& I don't even like polka dots!) I also believe that the fadyness of the polka dots make you ultra cool. ;p

  29. My hubby and I love going to the movies or to see a band, even just snugling up in front of a film on tv but at the moment we just love playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero on the Xbox.

I have an aversion to Polka dots due to trauma as a teenager. I went to a party in my new yellow and white polka t shirt and someone else was wearing one. Gone off them since then. I love ruched sleeves though.

  30. Date nights are important, but what is this "paying half" ou mentioned? The last time mt wife paid for a date she used my credit card! =)

When we were first married I was going to school four nights a week and spent all day Saturday doing homework. So our regular date was doing the grocery shopping together on Friday nights. After church on Sunday's we either visited family or found something free to do.

  39. There are so many cheap dates in Los Angeles. You will love Restaurant Week. Have you been to Griffith Park. A great date is to go to Grub and then go to Griffith Park. There is another great hike in Topanga Canyon and you can see the entire city.

Get some cheap pho and walk around the flower district and flower mart and make sure you get a cookie sandwich from BabyCakes.

Third street is great and you can walk to the Pier from there....or my favorite start in marina del Ray and bike to Venice.

What neighborhood do you live in?

  40. Such a cute outfit!! The Top looks so amazing with that skirt.

  41. I think your top is adorable! Actually, I recently picked up a top on sale at Anthropologie that is very similar to it (complete with ruched sleeves) only the background is navy blue and the polka dots are white. I thought for a moment that we may be shirt twins (well, close enough.)

The Getty Center is so gorgeous. I went there once on a trip to LA years ago. It was totally worth the congested traffic to get there!

  42. This is such a sweet outfit. The combination of the top with those shoes and the skirt is genius. Your pictures in the dark turned out well, mine never do.

  43. so pretty! i love the skirt, the wash on it is amazing, looks like suede from a distance. and i always wanna tie my hair in a bun like that..but i don't really like my hair shape hahaa

  44. love polka dots~ so fun and whimsical :) date nights for me + hubby are usually low key and inexpensive- eating some gyros, going to moma and people watching- one of our favorite pasttimes.

  47. You look like a little girl, so sweet Elaine! I love date nights! Alex and I LOVE walking, hahaha, we don't have a car, so we ALWAYS take a bus to go where we want, to the movies, to the park, to the center of our city just to sit down and talk on the grass, eating out at fast food snack bars, visiting people we love, etc. Our favorite night on the cheap is staying home watching DVDs and having pizza! :)

  48. As a fellow married/young/poor (a grad school income + the bit I bring in tutoring = little fun $) Angeleno, I thought I would share my favorite cheap dates,
Any Art Museum - LACMA, MOCA, Hammer, the Getty Villa (check websites many will have student or free nights)
The Venice Cannals- Real cannals built next to venice beach surronded by gourgeous homes. They are so fun to walk through.
The Watts Tower - Amazing piece of public art, not in the best neighborhood but so worth it
The Huntington Library Gardens- There is an admission fee but its not very much and so worth it
Devil's Night Drive In - Drive-in movies on the top of a parking structure in downtown. Tickets are $10, but all proceeds go to a local roller derby league. Plus you can pack a picnic.
Drive Muholand Drive - Best views you can get in LA
There is just so much to do on the cheap in this city!! Have fun exploring the greatness that is LA!!
    P.S. Love your blog.

  49. Sounds like a fun date night! Love, love the Getty, but not so much the parking prices haha! It went up $7 in a 1.5 yrs, isn't that crazy?? Anyway, you look great, as always, Elaine!:)

  51. You're pretty funny, Elaine! As for date nights, I think I go on far too many, but I always appreciate a cheap or free anything. My favourite "dates" (admittedly most of these were with a friend and therefore not dates, but anyway) are going on picnics to the beach. When a beach is available, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Date night huh? We go to the beach, the park (BBQ!), hiking (not really a date huh?), camping (not entirely free I guess), and we watch $3 movies at Pasadena's Regal Theatre. :)
