Let's talk fashion rules...

Sunday, August 08, 2010
We all have certain rules we follow when we get dressed. For me one of those rules is to have my belt match exactly with my shoes if there is enough going on in my outfit or if the base is boring, the belt must be completely different and unexpected. What are some rules you follow? And when do you break them?

Another rule I like to follow is if it's going to be casual, it's going to be casual; if it's dressy, it's going to be dressy...although I've been doing well with mixing and matching these elements together. I have to say this is one of my most extremes. I know. I'm so wild. I still had blue and orange on my mind while picking out this outfit. I had a hard time figuring out what belt and shoes to wear. In my mind, this belt looked the best with my chambray shirt. Following the rule I stated above, I had to pair it with my brown wedges. Normally, I wouldn't wear orange and brown together. I like how it turned out though. It's different and unexpected for me.

  6. LOVE this eclectic mix!! way to think outside the box :)!!

  7. I know what you mean about the belt matching, but in my case the belt can't be the same color. I have so many rules when it comes to belts that I just won't go there.

  8. great look - I adore the orange skirt!

  9. So pretty!
I have so many internal rules... minimal synthetics, not tunics for me, short skirt+ modest top... they are just for me to follow and it's hard to explain to someone why something just won't work.

  10. I think my biggest fashion rule is I simply canNOT mix brown and black. I just can't handle it. I also can't wear flipflops unless I'm going to the beach/pool. I love your outfit, too! That combination is absolute perfection.

  11. This is one of my most favorite of your outfit posts. It looks great! It's okay to break the rules sometimes.

I like to keep my outfits neutral, with one bright pop of color. Usually it's the shoes.

  12. i don't think i would have thought to put those colors together. but they really look great. it makes a bright, happy look

  22. love the wedges. I actually like pairing the casual with the not so casual sometimes, but I definitely get a few strange looks especially if the outfit turns out more dressed up than dressed down for like school haha. Would never try that color combo but it looks great on you!

  23. I like the brown and orange! I dont follow any rules really, anything pretty much goes as long as i dont look like a tart. So if the skirt is short the neckline has to be high and visa versa. But I dont really wear many short skirts anyway. Daisy Dayz Home

  24. That's so funny because I LOVE the orange/brown combo...this looks great! BTW, I bought some fabric to make a skirt and it reminds me of you...I'll let you know when I make it.

  25. That looks very cute! I USED to have a rule about yellow...but as you know I broke that! LOL! :)

I actually always pair bright colors with brown or black, I find it tones them down a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love that skirt, it's like diamonds and houndstooth and awesomeness.

One of my rules is to not get matchy - no matching earring and necklace sets, no matching the exact shade of the top to the purse or belt or shoes. Sometimes there are exceptions.

  27. wow, i love this outfit! i like how you tied your belt and i think the blue goes so well with the orange. unexpected, but lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really love this look. That skirt is so dynamite.

One of my rules is that I absolutely have to have some definition around my waist, whether it's a belt or a pencil skirt. Styling something that's too floaty or undefined is hard for me.

  29. This is one of my very favorite outfits for you ... it looks like you just can't help but look darling!

  30. Ah, I find that I do end up doing that myself as well. But usually only when I'm wearing leather/brown shoes ... in which case, I match the leather color and hardware of the belt to the shoe as best I can.

Generally speaking, though I don't really have many rules for fashion. As long as I'm comfortable!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The blue and orange is gorgeous!! I need to try this. We bought an Ikea duvet cover and it's white, blue, green, and orange (patterned) and the color combo is just perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was just thinking today about how I always like my belt & shoes to go together... but I want to be more brave. Good work! So cute.

    ReplyDelete
  33. yes, my belt has to match the shoes!!

also, if i'm wearing a hat, it has to match something in the outfit...grey hat with grey sweater, for example.

but as far as colors go, i like bright tops, and darker colors on the bottom

    ReplyDelete
  34. I REALLY really like this combination. Definitely going to try it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love the contrast and the pattern of your skirt. I can't really think of any rules that I have besides that my outfit has to have an interesting silhouette and a lot of accessories. And I love those rules too much to break them, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I actually have a little bit of a perverse satisfaction in breaking some fashion "rules" like NOT wearing brown and black together or NOT wearing more than one particular pattern... but of course there are still rules, like... don't ever wear sweatpants outside the house unless there's some emergency involved. That actually sounds a bit drama queen to say, but I never was a fan of looking like one literally rolled out of bed.

I really like blue/orange combo, I think it worked out well here!

  39. I don't think I have any rules really. I'll mix all sorts of colours and patterns - just whatever I fancy at the time.

Love the mix of orange/brown/blue in your outfit today.

    ReplyDelete
  40. hmm..
    i don't wear denim with denim, and i never break that rules.. i don't know how to ^^;

wuah.. never knew blue and orange can match together! so beautiful :)

  41. yes, it looks good! I'm not sure of my fashion rules anymore, seems like most of them are out the window :) I just make sure i'm comfortable :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. This outfit came together perfectly! I usually am not a fan of orange and blue combinations, but I think the shades play really well together here.

I don't really adhere to many fashion rules, but I do tend to dress more conservatively when I'm teaching.

  46. I have big hips, so really my most useful advice to myself is not to buy long shirts or tops that stick to the body at hip level because they're just not flattering for me. I do like looser tops like goddess and imperial cuts; they camuflage those not-so-perfect body areas very well.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have some rules, I really like to stick to one theme. Like all-girly, or menswear or pattern mix. :)

I am really in love with your orange skirt! it is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Too cute! I might need to eBay that skirt. And I really think the orange/brown combo looks fantastic. I love it when we open ourselves up to new possibilities. :)

  49. i don't have nearly as many rules as i probably should! and my rules are totally silly. like, i don't wear colors that i don't personally feel a connection with (i know this sounds crazy and new-agey which is not how i am, i swear!). like i'm not aggressive or fiery, so i don't like to wear red. but i break all the rules if i love something. so my rules are kinda useless. ~joelle

    ReplyDelete
  50. I am guilty of the belt-shoes matching, too! I also have a tendency to wear brown shoes if the rest of my outfit is black, haha, like I'm trying to pull away from being too matchy matchy.

Anyway, I really love your skirt, it's super cute, and it's neat how you twisted your extra belty-ness under like that. :D

    ReplyDelete
  51. These colors are the colors I'm thinking of doing my living room in...I love blue and orange and brown all together. I think orange and black are too Halloween, so I love orange with brown. Love how you looped your belt.

    ReplyDelete
  52. One of my rules is not to wear navy and black together...or brown and black. Unless it's all together in a pattern. Generally I can't stand colors that are too similar together. Although when I was a kid I felt crazy and wore a pink shirt with a red cardi...what was I thinking?!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Love the orange skirt Elaine.

Usually I go with how my outfit works with my accessories, I do experiment with colors sometimes, but if I want it to be plain and simple I need something that will become a head turner.

I also match my bags with my shoes or sometimes the colors of my outfit.

I do break some rules...but it really depends on your mood and how you are feeling.

    Thanks for this one love
    take care always

  56. I adore this outfit Elaine - it's a perfect pairing of awesome skirt and dressed down shirt. That skirt is amazing - love it!

And the only rule that I follow is to try out outfits and trends but remain true to myself. And to not be afraid of breaking so-called rules :). AND (last one) to make sure each outfit has some kind of pizazz element - be it the shoes, belt, or some other accessory!

  57. The color combo is really cute here!
Lately, my only rule has been "Don't wear smelly or stained clothes in public." I'm down to only a few things in my closet that fit me, so as long as it smells clean, it'll do! Very glamorous, I know.

  64. After some thought, I realized that I always use my face as a focal point. I like color on or near my face; so earrings are important.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I looove the casual/dressy look you've got going on here.
I still haven't totally jumped on the pattern mixing train. I can hear my Puerto Rican mother telling me I look like a clown as I put things on. I love the look on other people, but her voice just stops me every time. Can't break mom's rules, you know.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think this unexpected combo worked out quite well for you :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. hmmm, I can tell you a vote I definitely break. That "no white after labor day" rule.

Your outfit is so great. How do you have that belt done? It's perfection.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I meant "rule" not "vote". Sorry, watching the bachelor pad and had vote on the brain.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I love that skirt each and every time I see it. I rarely wear belts, but if it's a neutral one, then I like it to match or at least be in the same color family.

I'm trying to get over mixing metals. I love gold and silver equally, but never mix. Maybe tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Interesting thoughts. First off, ADORE this look. It is perfect. I love the mix of dressy and casual and the orange and blue. Perfect.

As for rules, actually, one rule I do go by often enough is I try to "break" fashion rules! It is sort of a fun thing I like to do sometimes, see what "rules" I can break yet still have the outfit look good!

It is actually something I used to do in art school...break the rules and have my painting still "work". And I approach outfits a lot like art. btw, if you didn't know, orange and blue are complimentary colours...that is prob. why they look so good together in this outfit!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I've worn chambray with dressy skirts lately and I really like the discordant feeling it gives. This look is nice.

    ReplyDelete
  72. that skirt is amazing! i want want want it!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. My rule is, don't wear only baggy clothes! You turn out to look like a bag if you do.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Great outfit...really love the belt!

    ReplyDelete
  75. i don't think there can be rules in fashion actually. you can say, only these two things go together, but then all of a sudden a there will be an exception to the rule. it's all about just knowing what you like and what you think looks good together.
    love the outfit too!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. My belt and shoes have to match, too, or I feel like something is "off." I'm old school like that. :P

Chambray seems to go with just about everything. I'd love to pair it with something tulle, pouffy and ridiculous myself... you know, very Carrie Bradshaw. :D

    ReplyDelete
  77. I LOVE this! It's a totally unexpected combination but completely wonderful! You always amaze me with your awesome styling! :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Love how your secondhand stuff doesn't look secondhand at all. I try and match my jewellery-all gold or all silver, but now I've got necklaces with gold, silver and bronze all together so that rule is dead!

    ReplyDelete
  79. This is a great combination. Brown and orange is a classic 70s combination and I love the blue mixed in.

I don't have many rules (hence some of the disasters I have when I push the boundaries too far) but I only wear loose items on EITHER the top or bottom, not both as this drowns me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. that skirt is fabulous...and the belt with it is perfect!
    xox alison

    ReplyDelete
  81. Interesting to hear your rules. I should probably have more rules myself, as it would create more order, and I'm sure I do, but I can't think of them. I suppose matching belt and shoes would be somewhere close to the surface though.

I think you look great, by the way. I like the pattern of that skirt, and everything else ties in really nicely!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I love 3/4-length sleeves, so I almost always scrunch the sleeves of my tops and cardis, and even some jackets, if the sleeves are long!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love the fabric and color pairing. My rule is usually top and shoes should match. I rarely wear belts but I do go on a bling overdrive sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The outfit is gorgeous Elaine!!!
What rules I follow? maybe that I'm not into the mixing and matching patterns still, I try everything to combine. And like you when it is casual it's casual, when you have go a little bit formal or dressy, then you have to do it!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think this outfit looks really well-put together, I just love the colours and that pattern on your skirt is crazy awesome!

For rules, my friends say that they learnt that you have to match your shoes to your bag (which is the reason why shoe shops sell bags too, how's that for trivia XDD)

And my mum has berated me on occasion about me breaking her rule of not mixing soft fabric and hard fabric together, because they just don't go well together. Sometimes she's right though!

    ReplyDelete
  86. What a stunning outfit. I really love that skirt! Orange is a perfect color on you!

I've noticed since starting my blog a year or so ago that I have been taking more fashion risks and breaking more rules. I think fashion bloggers, like you, have inspired me to be more brave. Before, I used to stick by the strictest of "rules." Everything matched. Never mixed prints. Etc. BORING! :P

    ReplyDelete
  87. I really like orange and brown. It reminds me of fall. I have only a few rules but most for myself. Like I never wear skirts below the knee or buy an item that goes against my personal style.

    ReplyDelete
  88. my #1 rule: if it's not comfortable, I don't wear it

    ReplyDelete
  89. Great look! I like to bend rules and mix prints and colors. I like to be bold and bright at the office which is typically full of black and brown basic skirts and pants.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I have one rule only: never wear tight tops + tight bottoms because I know well my curves, or loose tops + loose bottoms because it seems taht I don't care about fashion, haha, dunno, that's me. Oh, and I always mix them hahaha. You look gorgeous by the way! xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  95. i LOVE your skirt! i remember one time someone in middle school said "never wear blue, black, and navy together." i followed that for a while, but now if it comes up i'm like that's stupid! they go together just fine. also, i dont know how this happened but i only just realized that brown and gray can go together... because i have ALWAYS said never wear black and brown together. ahh...rules :] hehe

  97. I'm loving this outfit! The orange and the blue and amazing together.
As for rules I follow, I always do the take one accessory off before leaving the house. I love the over baubled look that some people can pull off, but I never feel I am one of those people. It always feels like too much. Also, I have many different animal necklaces (owls, horses, etc) and I cannot mix animals. No idea why.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I don't wear enough belts to break any such rules but I do break the "don't match black and brown" rule. Or even "don't match navy and black" rule.

I love your belt here! I often match brown with orange so don't worry about it! I think all reds match ^^

  103. I just read the post today...the other day just looked at the pictures ;) I would always think orange and brown would go together because they're earthy colors. I would less expect the orange and blue color combo. My one rule, I match my underwear to my outfit... Only I know, but it makes me feel clever. Lol! :)
