Sweet Androgyny

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
I've always been a fan of masculine clothes. I think it's sexy when a woman can don a man's clothes and be able to pull it off a la The Sartorialist. I did not wear any men's clothing today so I guess this isn't sexy. I know it's great to balance the masculine pieces with feminine but I didn't want to overdo it with a big necklace or something. Sometimes simplicity is best.

A few of you have mentioned my hair. The waves aren't natural... I wish! It's super easy - I put my hair up in two buns at night after showering. Then in the morning I poof it out, curl my bangs and roots where it's flat, spritz some hairspray and I'm set. Takes me about 5 minutes!

  1. I like this outfit. Loving the simplicity. Why do we have such similar taste?

  2. When i want to make something more "girly" I pair it with pink shirt , or some other girly item. I'll have to try this with my hair! But mines pretty heavy, I don't know if it will work....

  4. I love the look of this outfit, and I'm so with you on styling like a dude sometimes (although for me it usually occurs because of laziness).

  5. i adore simplicity with all my heart and you're always so great at it. :) love the stripes under the crisp, white button down!

  6. Elaine, I totally agree! I think that androgyny can be very sexy, almost empowering for a woman to don a man's clothing (but then that could delve into women's psychology, but that would be a long and tedious comment...).

ANYWAY. Yes. Love menswear-inspired clothes. You look cute. Yeah. :)

  7. You always can make simple look incredibly chic. I seriously think "Gap ad" almost every time I see your outfits and it totally works. You can so rock Effortless Chic.

(And I'm going to have to try that with the hair - thanks!)

  8. The stripes peeking out are perfect! I love androgynous looks too, but I don't think I pull them off very well. I'm too ...uh... 'curvy' I guess. ;)

  18. Even though you're not wearing any clothes made for a dude, you're definitely rocking menswear-inspired pieces, like the brogues, the button down, and even the muted colors. I agree with many other posters- you always do manage to make unfussy outfits look so chic.
Your hair is amazing. Mad jealous that it's (mostly effortless). Way to go.

Boston is still in a cold side of the country. It was 50 and sunny the other day and we thought it was the best day of our life!

  22. I'm a fan of the menswear look as well, though certainly you don't have to wear actual men's clothing to wear the look. :) I do tend to shy away from it myself (I'm a broken record) because I fear looking mannish. I guess if I had longer hair and/or wore more makeup maybe I could pull it off?

  23. I like you love masculine looks on women. Sometimes women pull things over so much better than men.

  30. Your hair does look great like that! I do something similar by braiding my hair at night and hairspray the following morning.
Loving that warm looking jacket, and stripes always look so great on you.

  31. I love your coat!

Elaine, I don't think you necessarily need to wear actual men's clothes to pull off a quasi-androgynous look. I think that when you wear these flat oxfords with jeans and a tucked-in woven top, you are kind of creating a look that could work just as well on a guy even if no one would ever mistake you for anything other than female. It works very well on you.

  32. Love the brogues so much. And like so many others have said, the stripes peeking out from under the white shirt look great.

  39. I love the menswear trend! In fact, my favorite weekend staple is wearing an oversize men's shirt. But I like to balance it with girly jewelry. I really love your hair here. It looks free-spirited!
