The Closet of SHAME

9/13/2009

Welcome to my side of the closet. It is an embarrassment, isn't it? But I suppose if I really were ashamed, I wouldn't be posting it. I always liked seeing how other people organized their closet so I thought I'd show you mine! And if anybody wants to do the same, please leave a link in the comment....I'd love to check it out!

My tops are organized by layering....for now (i.e., my layering shirts, one-layer shirts, two-layer shirts). They probably will not stay that way for long.

My scarf (scarves?) collection.
There's a wide black one in the back that you can't see. I'm in love with it.

The cave.
It's always a hassle to try to get anything from there. So for now, my fall/winter things are hibernating, but they are getting restless. They are organized by type (i.e., 3/4 length sleeves, long sleeves, turtlenecks, jackets...).

What I stand in front of every day.
If you didn't believe that I was poor and not creative, this should change your mind. Sleeping bags? Toilet paper? Boxes? Cheap plastic drawers? YES. Our closet doubles as storage space. But I tried to make the bottom box (used to hold my purses) look better with some cheap wrapping paper. And if you couldn't tell, the plastic drawer above the green box is my hold-everything-box. It actually goes into the plastic contraption holding my jeans and shorts. I thought it was creative....

As you can see, I really don't have very many clothes. This is all of it....for warm and cold months. I feel like I don't need new clothes. But there are times when I casually stop by the consignment store...you know...just to check things out. Also, If you didn't notice, there are no shoes visible! That is because we have a no-shoes policy in our apartment. Probably the only aspect of my Korean culture that I have integrated into our lives. Anyway, if you have ANY suggestions about closet organization, feel free to leave a comment!

Seriously love it!

I pretty much can't believe that all of your amazing outfits come from that many clothes...

I guess I can't complain about not having many clothes----I'm just not as creative as you to make them work together!

i think your closet looks wonderfully organized! whatever works for you is the best, there is nothing worse than not being able to put together an outfit because you dont know where pieces are. all your pieces are fab, too! :)

I love those plastic drawers. They make up 1/2 of my furniture that moves with me...and the other half of my furniture are big, plastic Rubbermaid boxes. Classy, I know.
I try to organize my closet by type (pants together, skirts together, long sleeve shirts together, etc.), but after about a week it's all over.

In Canada, at least in most of Canada I think, we don't wear shoes indoors either. I do store them in my shoe closet upstairs but only after I've cleaned and disinfected the soles :) Definitely no walking in the house with shoes - cleaned or not - it's just weird to me.
I like to organize by colour, then type, then length of clothing. It mixes seasons but since I layer anyway, I don't mind.
Hope you had a great weekend!

Oh gosh, it looks much neater than mine. I find it hard to get anything in or out of mine, i have wayy too much stuff, but cant help but buy more!! eeek!
WHat i do is have 3 space bags with my current summer clothes in and then when it gets warmer, i will take them all out and store my winter pants and coats in the space bags. It works quite well :)

I don't think you should be ashamed of your closet! It's neat and organised :)

I'm from Bangladesh and we don't wear shoes indoors, either (except for at-home slippers sometimes). I've carried over this policy while living in London, so I've got a shoe rack right as you enter the flat, and everyone thinks I'm displaying my shoes! Nope, I'm just making it more convenient for me to take them off as soon as I get in, or put them on when I'm leaving ;)

We are wire-hanger soul mates. I have a hard time justifying throwing mine away and replacing with plastic hangers. But you are very tidy. And brave. My closet is pretty embarrassing.

You closet is very tidy. Mine is really small and I had to share it with my roomie. Hence, my clothes are sometimes really messed up. We're having a no-shoes policy as well, so we keep all the shoes in their boxes, not in the closet...

u r so tidy and what is wrong with those plastic boxes? I love how creative u r with your clothes.... ! ahahhah.. u shld see my room.. i hv these boxes in my cupboard and all under my bed. We dont wear shoes in the house & I hv a super small room so these plastic boxes helps me keep my bedsheets, curtains and clothes organized.. or at least trying to be organised! LoL...

Wow, your closet is well organized and neat. Mine is about to burst right now because it's small and well..cramped.

I wear slippers inside the house.

I just waded in and tackled my messy closet yesterday. I love a neat closet but they are so hard to upkeep! For me, grouping by color and season works best. I am not so industrious as to pack away all winter things however (I should! they are so space consuming!)I also switched to all of the same style hangers gradually- and it helps the clothes hang better on the rod.

I have never thought of taking pictures of my closet, but this is a great idea! I organize my clothes by type e.g all the skirts together etc but it is a bit a mess:)

Man I wish my wardrobe was that organsised! If I have clothes to put away they simply go on the nearest hanger!

honestly I don't see anything wrong with your closet..it's quite tidy and organized =D
I, on the other hand, usually organize it by types and have it color coordinated also haha..I'd also rather fold than hang them except for jackets and dresses of course..

right now i am super tempted to buy a bunch of huggable hangers! i have one pack and they already make my closet seem bigger! plus they keep clothes from slipping off the hanger, which is sooo nice!

Your closet is quite organized I'd say- mine is EXPLODING and I have 2 bureaus of clothes- full! I change them every season so in boxes right now is all my fall/winter stuff... wow I think I have too many clothes?....nah! :)

I'm terrible with closet organization. I'm always rearranging! Although, I tend to keep all my tank tops separate from short and long sleeve tops. I also organize tops by color. But other than that, I still think my closet looks a mess! Haha!

i LOVE seeing photos of other people's closets! one thing that helped a lot with mine was getting a 2nd bar- it actually hangs from the top bar which is nice. so the top bar is shirts and sweaters, and the bottom one is skirts and pants. i should take a photo but my closet is literally a black hole- it's impossible to see anything! ~joelle

I'm kind of ridiculous about my closet. Shirts on the left, then skirts then dresses. The shirts are organized chromatically: black, grey, white, pink, red, orange (if I had any) tan, yellow, light green, dark green, blueish green, light blue, dark blue. I don't seem to own any purple anymore. I read about these new Z hangers that can go easily into small neck holes...I totally want them.

When I had a lot more time on my hands, my closet was super organized.. by color, by type, by season.. everything! Now its just a big fat mess. =S

You've inspired me to go and sort mine out, actually! And maybe I'll blog about it. Do people wear shoes in the house anywhere? they certainly don't in the UK...

i organzie my closet by season then by categories. i need to rotate my clothes, else i don't have enough room.

by all the "looks" you have on your blog i would imagine you have an endless array of clothes... guess i have no excuses now... I've thought of starting my own fashion blog to help me utilize what's in my closet and have some type of creative outlet... I've played with the idea for awhile but have never got around to it, maybe now that I'm in Utah I'll finally get around to it, since i need all the artistic inspiration i can get around here ;) your blog is lovely...

Shame?? Where? Your closet is totally organized and functional! I love the creative ways you found for getting more space! My closet is basically huge mess and can't stay organized for more than 2 days... As for the shoes in the house issue- the Romanian custom is also taking your shoes off! Unless the host says not to, of course.

Your closet is cute and cozy! I am going to do a post of mine someday soon, so I'll let you know when! Where do you keep the shoes though?
Also you do an amazing job of creating so many looks with what you have!

oh, this is so much more organized than our closet that it is shameful! Do you and your husband share one? I feel like I remember you mentioning that at one time when I had wrote about my husband and I having to share a tiny closet!

I am not going to leave a message on how to organize your closet... I try and then within a month it looks like a cave of sequin explosions... So, you are definately better off then me.

Elaine said...

I can't believe how many people take their shoes off inside their house! :D

Kjrsten said...

don't know if this will help with closet org. ideas that you are looking for, but here goes...
I kind of keep everything all together in sections of types i.e. shirts-sweaters-pants-skirts-dresses-etc. and then I rotate them to the back of their "section" once they have been worn and try to only wear the items in the front. this way I cycle through my closet which gives a more equal opportunity for me to make sure and wear each piece. instead of sticking to the "faves". that seems to be my problem, wearing the comfort zone items, instead of getting creative/experimental. does that make sense? Hmmm, this could be a good post for haveacuteday!

I actually think it's really cool that you don't have a lot of clothing. I would rather see how people tweak a limited amount of clothing into different outfits. I have a lot of clothes, but most of it I don't really wear anymore. I'm hoping to gradually be able to create a new wardrobe (I'm a poor college student, so gradually is a key word) that doesn't necessarily contain a lot of pieces but is really versatile so I can wear my favorite things often, but in different ways/with different shoes and accessories.

Elaine,

You post totally inspired and made me think at the same time. I always feel like I have no clothes to wear...Honestly, I think I probably have 10 times more than you do. I'm learning so much from your blog, you have no idea....

mariel said...

i agree...i would've thought you had a closet 10x that size with all the beautiful outfits you put together. mine is organized totally by color...the dresses all hang on the side since they're longer, but the rest are mixed into a lovely rainbow.
p.s. ahh don't hang your knits! (ie. your hibernating clothes) they get stretched out!

ha, I wish I could stay this organized all the time! I can be that organized, but it usually falls apart after a day or two, and then I don't fix it for weeks.

I basically do you what you do - use plastic drawers. cheap and effective. I prefer something other than wire hangers, though... so what my sister and I do is whenever one of us is near Ikea (cheap wooden hangers in packs of 5) we pick up one pack. Gradually, you get enough hangers. I also did that with these cardboard boxes I use for pajamas and clothes like swimsuits and heavy coats when it's the wrong season.

Here's a link to a picture of my closet... yep, I already had one online, so I labeled it just now. I'm kinda lame like that. Plus I'm kind of an insomniac like that. =)

When my house is clean, I feel calm. When my life is beautifully penned out on my calendar, every appointment and activity in its place, I feel at ease. When I open my pantry door and all the canned goods are in a row, sorted by type, dinner gets made. The same thing applies to my clothing closet.....Read more on my blog post "Beautiful Closet".

i saw you as creative before this post but now i am in total admiration! just in awe of your ability to create unique outfits over and over again!

about a month ago i re-organized my closet and it appears i have the opposite problem: TOO MANY clothes! (thanks to my amazing gift-giver of a mother) and i don't take the time i should to piece the outfits together. too many clothes and too many ideas.

i blogged my re-organization here: http://chailoveyou.blogspot.com/2009/08/coming-out-of-closet.htm

but after seeing your method i kinda want to go back and rethink... the layering idea is so good!

found your blog through wardrobe remix and i love it! adding you to my blogroll now! :)

I don't understand... where do you store your shoes?
They can't even be in your closet? Do you keep them in the garage - or do you just have like three pair that you keep in the hallway outside your door? And people don't steal them?

Tristi Pinkston said...

I think the trick is learning to mix and match, like you've done. Keep up the good work!
